Chapter 25PrincipeCristiano.1.25

The Integrity of Faith

The author rejects the notion that doctrinal differences are trivial, citing the historical cost of defending the faith.

And one cannot say what some politicians claim: that little hangs on the points where the heretics of our times break with Catholics and differ from them; that it is not reasonable to make such a fuss over matters so small and slight; and that it would be well for each side to give up something of its right, come to terms, and become one—as the Calvinist soldier Monsieur de la Noue says in his Military Discourses.1 Ulfilas, bishop of the Goths, deceived them by telling them that between Catholics and Arians there was no difference in the faith or in the substance, but only in the word by which the same thing was signified; and the Goths, believing this to be true, were led astray. But there is nothing so small or slight in the matters of the faith that the true and genuine Catholic ought not to die a thousand times for it.2 The Arians threw the world into turmoil and cruelly persecuted the Catholics because they would not consent to change a single word in the Creed and, instead of homoousion, say homoiousion—where, as far as the sound goes, there is a difference of only one letter, though in meaning the difference is enormous. And the Catholics were so steadfast in the purity of their faith that they preferred to suffer every calamity and misery in the world rather than yield to the heretics even a tittle or a jot by which our holy religion would be diminished.34 Saint Jerome says that because the word homoousion was removed at the Council of Rimini through the deceit of the Arian heretics Valens and Ursacius, Christendom was in grave danger, as some Catholic bishops believed that removing just that one word from the Creed would bring peace and concord to the Church.5

Constancy in Truth

Saint Basil serves as the model of steadfastness, refusing to compromise divine truth for imperial favor.

When the prefect of Valens, the Arian emperor, begged Saint Basil not to be so stubborn and obstinate in his opinion and in refusing to change a single word, but instead to soften, adapt himself to the times, and value the Emperor's friendship highly, that most holy man answered him with these words: "Those who have been raised on the food of the sacred Scriptures will not allow even one syllable of the divine dogmas and words to be changed; rather, if need be, they gladly embrace any kind of death for their sake."6 He added that he valued the Emperor's friendship highly when it was joined with piety, but when it parted from piety, he considered it very harmful.7 When the prefect called him mad for this, the Saint answered: "This is the madness I always want to have." And when the prefect threatened him with death, he said: "Would to God that I might deserve it."8 Finally, when the prefect gave him the night to think it over and come to a better decision, he said: "Tomorrow I will be the same man I am today; you see to it that you don't change." Such was the great constancy of this most holy and most learned doctor in refusing to allow even a single letter to be changed in what had been established at the Council of Nicaea.9

The Danger of False Doctrine

The author warns that contemporary heresies are not merely minor errors but a comprehensive assault on the foundations of the faith.

Saint Chrysostom, commenting on the words "as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone," says: "Do not give anyone, whether Jew or Greek, a reason for division or discord. But if you see something being done against piety, do not put harmony before the truth; instead, be brave and give your life to defend it." Saint Paul, writing to the Galatians, tells them that he wasn't willing to give way or agree with the false brothers who were sowing bad doctrine in the field of the Church, not even for an hour, not for a moment. This holds true even if the points on which the heretics of our time contradict the Catholic Church were few or of little substance—though in the faith, as I said, nothing is of little substance, but of much. Yet they are so many and so substantial that they couldn't be more so. These hellish monsters haven't been content to take up some of the ravings that other heretics have taught; instead, they have gathered and joined into one all the errors of all past heretics, and from their own heads added new ones that no person of understanding could hold, in order to cast down the foundations of our religion, darken the divine mysteries, muddy the springs of grace, and, if they could, put out the shining light of the Gospel and extinguish every spark of light and truth. In the deepest mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, in that of the Incarnation of the Son of God, in that of the ineffable Sacrament of the altar, in all the other sacraments, in the matter of grace and free will, in the justification of the sinner, in the merits of the justified, in the pardon, remission, and indulgence of sins, in the adoration of images and the veneration and intercession of the saints on earth and in heaven, in purgatory and in hell, concerning men and angels and demons, concerning creatures and the Creator himself, they have invented so many, so destructive, and so deranged errors that they cannot be counted—and it is not right to list them here, so as not to infect the eyes or the ears of those who read this writing or hear it.10

The Incompatibility of Light and Darkness

Using scriptural epithets, the author argues that the fundamental divide between the faithful and the heretical makes civil coexistence impossible.

But what more arguments and reasons do we need to prove that heretics and Christians cannot be well joined in one body and commonwealth, since it is enough to confirm the point by weighing the names the Holy Spirit gives to good Catholics and those he gives to heretics?11 Christ our Redeemer and his apostles call faithful Christians children of God, servants of God, children of light, children of promise, saints, sanctified, kings and priests of God, faithful temples and heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ; so how can people like these join and live in company with those whom the same Holy Spirit, in the sacred writings, calls false prophets, ravenous wolves dressed in sheep's clothing, wanton goats, sowers of weeds, dogs, beasts, deceiving antichrists, crafty workers, ministers and children of the devil, children of darkness and of unbelief, enemies of the cross of Christ, slaves of their belly, vessels of wrath and of disgrace, men gone astray and cut off from the faith who listen to the teaching of demons, lovers of themselves, greedy, haughty, proud, blasphemers, ungrateful, wicked, restless, unrestrained, traitors, puffed up, who wear a mask of piety and are enemies of all piety, and who every day go from bad to worse, erring and leading others into error, despisers of princes and natural lords, wells without water and mists driven by the winds, for whom the darkness is prepared; brute animals, trees without fruit and twice dead and uprooted, waves of a raging and troubled sea, and wandering stars kept for the terrible storm of hell?1213 So how can these join with those and live together under the same laws in one city?14

«Fino católico» rendered as genuine/pure Catholic.
  3. 3Source «omusion» / «omiusion» are OCR for Greek homoousion (of one substance) vs. homoiousion (of like substance)—the Nicene vs. semi-Arian formulas; the one-letter (iota) difference is the point of the sentence.
  5. 5Normalized: «hercjes arriíanos» → «herejes arrianos»; «omusion» → homoousion; «Arimino» = Rimini (Council of 359). Valens and Ursacius are the known Arian agents in that episode.
  6. 6Source "estimase eu mucho" read as "estimase en mucho" (value highly); "eu" is a clear orthographic error for "en".
  7. 7Leading stray "n" before "Y" treated as a print/OCR artifact and ignored.
  8. 8Leading "n" and the stray "a" before the opening quote treated as print/OCR artifacts; quote read as «Pluguiese á Dios que yo la mereciese.»
  9. 9Source "dector" read as "doctor" (learned teacher/Doctor of the Church); clear orthographic error.
  10. 10Normalized several OCR corruptions in the source: Ln→En; justilicado→justificado; imiyenes→imágenes; cel infierno→el infierno.
Cuerpo y república is the political-ecclesial pairing expected here; crow (cuervo) is nonsensical in context.
  12. 12Source OCR is heavily corrupted in this sentence. If a cleaner witness differs, recheck the catalogue of names.
  13. 13'criados de Dios' rendered as 'servants of God' (Golden-Age sense of household servants), not 'created by God', which would not distinguish the faithful in this elevating list.
  14. 14Normalized '¿stos' read as 'éstos' (these).
