Chapter 9CaminoPerf.1.9

The Power of Total Detachment

The author emphasizes that true spiritual perfection is found in detaching from all created things to embrace the Creator alone.

Now let’s turn to the detachment we need, because everything depends on this, provided it’s done with perfection. Here I say that everything is in this, because embracing only the Creator and not receiving anything from all that is created, His Majesty infuses the virtues in such a way that, as we work little by little on what is within us, we won’t have much more to fight against, since the Lord takes His hand against the demons and against the whole world in our defense. Do you think, sisters, that it’s a small good to seek this good of giving ourselves entirely to the Whole without making ourselves parts? And since all good is in Him, let us praise Him greatly, sisters, for gathering us here where nothing else is discussed but this. And so I don’t know why I say this, since all of you who are here can teach me; for I confess that in this important matter I do not have the perfection I desire and understand is fitting, nor in all the virtues; and what I say here is the same, that it is easier to write than to act; and even in this I might not hit the mark, because sometimes it consists in experience to know how to say it, and I must hit the mark contrary to these virtues I have had.

Gratitude for the Cloistered Life

Teresa reflects on the immense grace of being called to a small, secluded community and expresses her own unworthiness.

As for the outside world, you can see for yourselves how far removed we are from everything here. Oh sisters, understand, for the love of God, the great grace that the Lord has given to those He has brought here, and let each one reflect on this well, for His Majesty wished that you be one among only twelve. And what about those who are better than me? I know they would gladly take this place, yet the Lord has given it to me, despite my unworthiness. Blessed are You, my God, and let all creation praise You, for this grace cannot be served, like so many others You have given me, for granting me the state of a nun was a great gift. And since I have been so wretched, do not trust in me, Lord, for where there were many good gatherings, my wretchedness would not be seen until my life came to an end, and You brought me to a place where, being so few, it seems impossible to be understood, because I walk with more care, having taken away all occasions. There’s no excuse for me now, Lord; I confess it, and thus I need Your mercy even more, so that You may forgive what I have done.

Maintaining the Spirit of the House

The author warns against seeking worldly comforts and emphasizes that those who cannot maintain detachment should not remain in the community.

What I ask of you is that anyone who sees in themselves that they are not meant to carry what is customary here should speak up. There are other monasteries where the Lord is served so well. Don't disturb the few that His Majesty has gathered here. In other places, there is freedom to find comfort with loved ones; here, if some are admitted, it is for the comfort of those themselves. But a nun who wants to see loved ones for her own comfort—if they aren't spiritual—should consider herself imperfect. She isn't detached, she isn't well, she won't have freedom of spirit, she won't have complete peace, and she needs a physician. I say that if she isn't healed and freed, she isn't meant for this house.

The Remedy for Attachment

Teresa offers a practical test for detachment: only engaging with loved ones when it can be done as a cross rather than a comfort.

The best remedy I see is not to see them until you feel free and can reach that from the Lord through much prayer. When you see it in such a way that you take it as a cross, then see them with joy, for then it will benefit them and not harm you.
