The Danger of Attachment to Relatives
Teresa warns that maintaining close ties with relatives after entering religious life hinders spiritual progress and peace.
Oh, if only the religious understood the harm that comes from dealing too much with relatives, how we would flee from them! I don't understand what consolation this is that they offer, even after leaving what pertains to God, except for our own peace and rest, since we cannot enjoy their recreations, and we do feel their troubles; no one can avoid crying, and sometimes even more than they do. As for the things used, if they make any gift to the body, the spirit pays well for it. You are free from that, since everything is common and no one can have a particular gift, so the alms given to them are in general, and you are free from having to please them for this, knowing that the Lord will provide for them. I'm shocked by the harm that comes from dealing with relatives; I don't think anyone will believe it unless they've experienced it themselves. And how forgotten this perfection seems today in religious life! I don't know what it means for those of us who claim to have left everything for God if we don't separate ourselves from what truly matters: our relatives. It seems we've reached a point where people consider it a lack of virtue not to want to deal much with their relatives, and they justify it with their own reasons.
Detachment and True Spiritual Kinship
The author encourages sisters to replace natural family bonds with a reliance on God, who provides more faithful companions.
In this house, daughters, take great care to commend them to God, for that is wise; in everything else, let’s keep them out of our minds as much as we can, because it’s natural for our will to cling to them more than to other people. I have been very fond of them, based on what they said, and I loved them so much that I couldn't forget them. And I know from experience, in myself and in others, that parents who are left behind, surprisingly stop doing for their children, and it is reasonable to be with them when they have a need for comfort; if we see that it doesn't harm what is essential, let us not be strangers, for with detachment it can be done, and with brothers; in other matters, although I have seen in my struggles, my relatives have been there, and the one who helped me the least in them has been the servants of God. Believe, sisters, that by serving Him as you should, you won't find better relatives than those whom His Majesty will send you. I know this is true, and as you focus on this—understanding that to do otherwise is to fail your true friend and spouse—believe that soon you will gain this freedom, and that you can trust those who love you solely for Him more than all your relatives, and they will not fail you; and in those you do not think about, you will find fathers and brothers. Because those who seek God's reward act for our sake; those who seek it from us, seeing us as poor and that we can benefit them in nothing, soon grow weary. And although this may not be true in every case, it is the most common view in the world today, because, after all, it is the world. Anyone who tells you otherwise and claims it is virtuous to do so, do not believe them; if they were to explain all the harm it brings, I would have to go on for a long time; and because others, who know better what they are saying, have written about this, let what has been said suffice. It seems to me that since I have understood this so well despite being so imperfect, what will those who are perfect do?
Fleeing the World for the Heart of Jesus
True detachment is not merely physical distance but a total surrender of the soul to Jesus, who becomes our only necessary connection.
Everything that encourages us to turn away from the world, as the saints advise, is clearly good. So believe me when I say that what clings to us the most, as I’ve mentioned, are our relatives, and it’s hardest to detach from them. For this reason, those who flee from their lands do well; if it helps them, I say, I don’t believe it’s about fleeing the body, but about the soul deliberately embracing good Jesus, our Lord, who, since everything is found there, forgets everything; although it’s a great help to separate ourselves until we come to know this truth; afterward, it may be that the Lord will want to give us a cross in what we used to take pleasure in, so that we may deal with them.
