Capítulo 5. Prosigue en los confesores. Dice lo que importa sean letrados.
The Danger of Confessional Isolation
The author warns against the temptation to restrict confession to a single person, which the devil uses to trap souls.
May the Lord not put anyone in this house to the test with the burden mentioned, for whom His Majesty is, of feeling both soul and body pressed, or that if the superior is well with the confessor, neither dares to say anything to him about her nor she to him about herself. Here will come the temptation to stop confessing very serious sins, out of fear of being in distress. Oh, may God help us, what harm the devil can do here and how dearly it costs them the pressure and honor! Because they deal with only one confessor, they think they are gaining something great for their religion and the honor of the monastery, yet this is how the devil manages to capture souls when he cannot do so in any other way. If they ask for another confessor, it seems as though the harmony of their religion is lost, or if he is not from their Order, they feel that dealing with him is an affront, even if he is a saint.
The Necessity of Learned Guidance
True spiritual progress requires a foundation of a good conscience and the guidance of learned confessors who can provide sound light.
I ask for this holy freedom out of love for the Lord, that she who is in a higher position may always seek to work with the bishop or provincial, so that, without the ordinary confessors, she may sometimes treat with all and communicate her soul with those who are learned, especially if the confessors do not have such knowledge, no matter how good they may be. Learning is a great thing for shedding light on everything. It will be possible to find both in some people. And the more grace the Lord grants you in prayer, the more you need to ensure that your works and prayers are well-founded. You already know that the first stone must be a good conscience, and with all your strength, you should free yourselves even from venial sins and pursue what is most perfect. It might seem that any confessor would know this, but that’s a deception. I once had a conversation with someone about matters of conscience who had heard everything throughout their theology course, and it caused me a lot of harm regarding things they said were nothing; and I know they didn't intend to deceive me nor had any reason to, but they simply didn't know more. And it happened to me with two or three others, besides this one. Having the true light to keep God's law perfectly is our greatest good. Prayer is well-founded on this. Without this strong foundation, the whole structure is built on falsehood. If they aren't given the freedom to confess and discuss matters of their souls with people like those I've mentioned, And I dare to say more: even if the confessor has everything, sometimes what I say should be done; for he may be deceived, and it's good that not everyone is misled by him; always striving to ensure that nothing goes against obedience, for there are means for everything, and it greatly benefits souls, so it is good to seek ways to do this.
The Superior's Responsibility for Spiritual Freedom
The superior must ensure sisters have the freedom to seek appropriate spiritual consolation, preventing the devil from exploiting ignorance.
Everything I've said here concerns the superior. And so I ask her again to seek consolation in this, since here we intend to have no other consolation than that of the soul, for there are different paths that God leads us by, and a confessor won't necessarily know them all; I assure you that there will be no shortage of holy people who want to help and console their souls, if they are meant to be, even if you are poor; for the one who sustains their bodies will awaken and inspire the will in those who give light to their souls, and remedy this evil, which is what I fear; for when the devil tempts the confessor to deceive him with some doctrine, he will know how to consult with others and will look more carefully at everything he does. Once this entry for the devil is removed, I hope in God that it won't exist in this house; and so I ask, for the love of the Lord, that the bishop who is to come allow the sisters this freedom and not take it away, when the people are such that they have knowledge and goodness, which can be understood even in such a small place as this.
Establishing Order and Stability
The author confirms that the current structure for confession and governance is supported by learned advisors and the bishop for the house's long-term perfection.
I've seen, understood, and discussed what I've written here with learned and holy people who have considered what is most suitable for this house to ensure its perfection continues. Among the dangers that exist while we live, we find this to be the least; that there should never be a vicar who has the authority to enter and leave, nor a confessor who has this freedom; rather, they should be there to safeguard the recollection and honesty of the house and the spiritual and external well-being, to report to the prelate when there is a need; but he should not be the superior. And this is what is being done now, not just according to my opinion; because the bishop we have now, under whose obedience we stand (who, for many reasons, was not given obedience to the Order), is a person friendly to all religions and holiness, and a great servant of God, called Don Alvaro de Mendoza, of noble lineage, and very eager to support this house in every way, gathered together learned and spiritual people with experience for this purpose, and it was determined. It will be reason enough for the prelates who come to agree with this opinion, since it has been determined by such good people and has been requested with many prayers to the Lord that He may illuminate it for the best; and, as far as is understood up to now, this is certainly true. May the Lord be pleased to carry it forward always as much as is for His glory, amen.
