The False Humility of Distrust
Teresa warns against a deceptive form of humility that causes agitation and distrust, contrasting it with true humility that brings peace.
So be careful, daughters, of a kind of humility that the devil instills with great anxiety about the seriousness of our sins, which often presses here in many ways, even to the point of withdrawing from Communion and having private prayer because one feels unworthy; the devil sets this before you. And when you come to the Most Holy Sacrament, whether you have prepared yourselves well or not, the time you should have spent receiving grace slips away. The situation can reach a point where it makes a soul feel that, because of being such, God has abandoned it so much that it almost doubts His mercy. Everything seems dangerous to them, and everything they do feels fruitless, no matter how good it is. It creates a sense of distrust that makes them feel powerless to do any good, because they think that what is good in others is bad in them. Pay close attention, daughters, to this point I'm about to make, because sometimes it may be humility and virtue to see yourselves as so lowly, while at other times it can be a tremendous temptation. I know this because I’ve been through it. Humility does not disturb, unsettle, or agitate the soul, no matter how great it is; rather, it comes with peace, joy, and calm. Even if someone sees themselves as worthless, clearly understands they deserve to be in hell, feels distressed, thinks—justly—that everyone should hate them, and hardly dares to ask for mercy, if it is true humility, this pain comes with a softness and contentment that we wouldn't want to be without. It doesn't agitate or press down on the soul; instead, it expands it and makes it capable of serving God more. This other pain disturbs everything, agitates everything, and turns the whole soul upside down; it is very distressing. I believe the devil tries to make us think we have humility, and if he could, he would turn us around to distrust God.
Remedies for Spiritual Temptations
Practical advice is given for overcoming temptations, including the importance of obedience, self-knowledge, and transparency with spiritual directors.
When you find yourselves in this state, cut off the thought of your misery as much as you can, and place it in the mercy of God and in the One who loves us and suffered for us. If it’s a temptation, you won’t be able to do this, because it won’t let you calm your thoughts or focus on anything; it will only tire you out more. It will be quite clear if you recognize this as a temptation. This is how it is with confused penances, to make us understand that we are more penitent than others and that you are doing something. If you’re hiding from your confessor or superior, or if you’re told to stop but don’t, that’s a clear temptation. Strive—though it may cause you more pain to disobey, for in this lies the greatest perfection. Another very dangerous temptation is the false security that we would never return to past sins or the pleasures of the world; "for I already understand that everything comes to an end and that the things of God give me more joy." This, if it occurs at the beginning, is very bad, because with this kind of security, nothing is done to avoid falling back into temptation, and it makes us blind; may God grant that the relapse is not much worse. Because the devil sees that it's a soul that can harm him and benefit others, he uses all his power to prevent it from rising. So, even if the Lord gives you more delights and tokens of love, never be so secure that you stop fearing you might fall again, and stay on guard against temptations. Be sure to discuss those gifts and blessings with the one who gives you light, without keeping anything secret. And take care that at the beginning and end of your prayer, whether through contemplative ascent or not, you always conclude with self-knowledge. If it is from God, even if you don't want to or ignore this warning, you'll do it even more often, because it brings humility and always leaves you with more light to understand how little we are. I don't want to dwell on this any longer, because you'll find many books containing these warnings. I've said this because I've been through it and have found myself in difficulty at times. Everything that can be said cannot provide complete assurance.
A Prayer for Discernment
The author turns to God in prayer, pleading for guidance and protection against the subtle betrayals of the enemy.
So, Eternal Father, what else can we do but turn to You and plead that You do not bring these adversities upon us in temptation? Let public matters come, for with Your favor we will be better delivered from them. But who can understand these betrayals, my God? We always need to ask You for help. Tell us something, Lord, so that we may understand and be assured. You already know that on this path not many go, and if they are to go with so many fears, they will go much less.
The Fear of the Path of Prayer
Teresa observes how the world fears the rare deceptions of those who pray while ignoring the obvious sins of the many.
It's strange that the devil doesn't tempt those who don't walk the path of prayer! And everyone is more frightened by one who deceives than by a hundred thousand who see public deceptions and sins, since there's no need to look to see if it's good or bad, because from a thousand leagues away, it's clear that it's Satan. Indeed, they are right, because so few are deceived by the devil among those who pray the Our Father, as has been said; it is a new and unused thing that causes admiration; it is very human to easily overlook the continuous things they see, and to be greatly frightened by what happens very rarely or almost never. And the very demons make them afraid, because it suits them well that many are lost for the sake of one who reaches perfection.
