A Fortress of Prayer
Teresa calls her sisters to become a spiritual fortress of prayer to support the Church's leaders in their battle against heresy.
Returning to the main point for which the Lord has gathered us in this house, and for which I greatly desire that we may be something to please His Majesty, I say that seeing such great evils, human forces are not enough to stop this fire of heretics, with which they have attempted to create a people who could remedy such a great evil by force of arms, and which is advancing so far, it seems to me necessary, like when enemies in time of war have ravaged the whole land, and seeing the Lord pressed by it, He withdraws to a city, which is very good to strengthen, and from there it sometimes happens to strike against the enemies, and those who are in the city are such a chosen people that they can do more alone than with many soldiers; if they were cowards, they could not, and many times victory is won in this way; at least, even if victory is not won, they are not defeated; because, as long as there is no traitor, if it is not due to hunger, they cannot be overcome. Here, this hunger cannot be such that it leads to surrender; to die, yes, but not to remain defeated. But why have I said this? So that you may understand, my sisters, what we must ask of God is that in this little castle of good Christians, none of us should stray to the enemies, and that He makes the captains of this castle or city very advanced in the way of the Lord, who are the preachers and theologians; and since most are in the religious life, may they progress greatly in their perfection and calling, which is very necessary; for as I have said, we must rely on the ecclesiastical arm and not the secular. And since we are worth nothing in helping our King in either of these ways, let us strive to be such that our prayers may be of value in assisting these servants of God, who have strengthened themselves through much effort in learning and good living, and have worked to help the Lord now. You might wonder why I emphasize this so much and say that we should help those who are better than us. I'll tell you, because I still don't think you understand how much you owe the Lord for bringing you to a place where you are so free from worldly business and distractions: this is a tremendous grace; those who are not in this situation should not be, especially now, less than in other times; because they must be the ones who strengthen the weak and encourage the small. How effective would soldiers be without captains? They must live among people, deal with them, be in palaces, and sometimes even engage with them in external matters. Do you think, my daughters, that it takes little to deal with the world and live in the world, to handle worldly affairs, and to engage, as I have said, in the conversation of the world, while being inwardly strangers and enemies of the world, as if one were in exile, and ultimately not to be human but angels? If that isn't the case, they deserve neither the title of captains, nor should the Lord allow them to leave their cells, because they'll do more harm than good. Now is not the time to look for imperfections in those who are meant to teach. If they aren't strengthened inwardly to understand what it means to have everything under their feet—to be detached from things that pass away and attached to eternal ones—they will inevitably show it, no matter how much they try to hide it. So, with whom have they dealt, if not the world? Don't be afraid to forgive, nor let any imperfection go unrecognized. Many good things will pass you by, and you might not even recognize them as such; but don't be afraid of what is bad or imperfect. Now I am astonished at who shows them perfection, not to keep it (for they seem to have no obligation to do so, they think they do enough if they reasonably keep the commandments), but to condemn, and sometimes what is virtue seems to them a gift. So don't think that little favor from God is needed for this great battle they are entering, but rather a tremendous one. I ask you to strive for these two things, so that we may deserve to receive them from God: first, that among the many learned and religious people, there may be many who possess the necessary qualities I mentioned, and that the Lord may prepare those who are not yet willing; for one perfect person will accomplish more than many who are not. Second, that once they are placed in this struggle—which, as I say, is no small thing—the Lord may hold them in His hand so they can be freed from the many dangers in the world and, in this dangerous sea, close their ears to the song of the sirens. And if we can do anything with God in this, while being enclosed, we fight for Him, and I will consider the efforts I have made to create this corner as very well spent, where I also intended to keep this Rule of our Lady and Empress with the perfection that was begun.
The Value of Intercession
The author encourages the sisters to see their prayers as a powerful, sacrificial service that is more valuable than worldly concerns.
Don't think it's useless to keep this request going, because some people find it hard not to pray a lot for their soul; and what better prayer is there than this one? If you're worried that your suffering won't be lessened in purgatory, this prayer will also relieve it, and may whatever else is lacking be fulfilled. What does it matter if I remain in purgatory until the day of judgment, if through my prayer even one soul could be saved? How much more beneficial is it for many and for the honor of the Lord! Don't pay attention to pains that come to an end when a greater service intervenes than the many that have passed for us. Always seek to know what is more perfect. So I ask you, for the love of the Lord, to ask His Majesty to hear us in this matter. I, though miserable, ask this of His Majesty, for it is for His glory and the good of His Church, which is what my desires are about. It feels presumptuous to think that I should have any part in achieving this. I trust, my Lord, in these your servants here, whom I see and know desire nothing but to please you. For your sake, they’ve left behind what little they had, and they wish they had more to serve you with. For you are not, my Creator, ungrateful, so that I should think you would stop doing what they ask of you. You did not despise, Lord, when you walked in the world, the women; rather, you always favored them with great compassion. When we ask you for honors, do not listen to us, or for rents, or money, or anything that pertains to the world; but for the honor of your Son, why should you not hear us, eternal Father, for whom I would lose a thousand honors and a thousand lives for you? Not for us, Lord, for we don't deserve it, but for the blood of your Son and his merits.
An Exclamation of Mercy
Teresa offers a passionate, intercessory prayer to the Eternal Father, pleading for the Church and the protection of the Most Holy Sacrament.
O eternal Father! Look, these many lashes, injuries, and such grave torments should not be forgotten. For, my Creator, how can such loving entrails as yours endure that what was done with such ardent love by your Son, and to please you, is held in such little regard today by those heretics who treat the Most Holy Sacrament with contempt, tearing down your churches? If there were anything left to do to please you! But everything was done perfectly. Was it not enough, eternal Father, that He had nowhere to lay His head while He lived, always in so many labors, but now those who have what He has to invite His friends (to see us weak and know that those who are to work must be sustained by such food) have it taken away? Has He not already paid sufficiently for the sin of Adam? Does this most loving Lamb have to pay for it every time we turn back to sin? Do not allow it, my Emperor. May Your Majesty be appeased now. Do not look at our sins, but at the fact that Your most holy Son redeemed us, and at the merits of Him and of His glorious Mother and of so many saints and martyrs who have died for You. Oh, the pain, Lord, that anyone has dared to make this request on behalf of everyone! What a terrible third, my daughters, to be heard, and that the request should be made for you! If it is to anger this sovereign Judge to see me so bold, and rightly so! But look, Lord, for You are already a God of mercy; have mercy on this little sinner, this worm that dares to approach You. Look, my God, at my desires and the tears with which I plead this to You, and forget my works, for the sake of who You are; have pity on so many souls that are lost, and favor Your Church. Do not allow any more harm to come to Christendom, Lord. Bring light to these darknesses.
The Purpose of Our Calling
The chapter concludes by reminding the sisters that their monastic life, discipline, and prayers must be entirely directed toward the needs of the Church.
I ask you, my sisters, for the love of the Lord, to commend this poor soul to His Majesty and to plead with Him to grant her humility, as it is something you are obligated to do. I do not particularly entrust to you the kings and prelates of the Church, especially our bishop; I see that those of today are so careful about this that it seems to me there is no need for more. Let those who come see that, having a holy prelate, they will be the subjects, and as something very important, always place it before the Lord. And when your prayers, desires, disciplines, and fasts aren't used for this purpose I've mentioned, realize that you aren't fulfilling or accomplishing the end for which the Lord has gathered you here.
