The Daily Bread of His Presence

Teresa reflects on the meaning of 'today' in the Lord's Prayer, emphasizing that Christ remains with us in the Eucharist to sustain us in His will.

In this request, 'for each day' seems to mean 'forever.' As I was thinking about why the Lord, after saying 'each day,' went on to say 'give us this day, Lord,' making it ours every day, it seems to me that we possess Him here on earth and will also possess Him in heaven, if we make good use of His companionship. He doesn't stay with us for any other reason than to help, encourage, and sustain us in doing this will that we've said should be fulfilled in us. The word "today" seems to refer to a single day, which lasts only as long as the world endures, and no longer. And well, just one day! And for those unfortunate souls who are condemned, who will not enjoy Him in the next life, it is not their fault if they allow themselves to be overcome, for He does not cease to encourage them until the end of the battle; they will have no excuse or complaint against the Father because He was taken at the best time. And so His Son tells Him that, since it is only for one day, He should be allowed to pass in service; for since His Majesty has already given Him to us and sent Him into the world solely by His will, He now wishes, by His own will, not to abandon us, but to remain here with us for the greater glory of His friends and the suffering of His enemies; that He asks for nothing more than "today," now again; that He has given us this most holy bread forever, we are certain of it. His Majesty has given us—as I have said—this sustenance and manna of Humanity, which we find whenever we wish. If it isn't due to our own fault, we won't die of hunger, for in whatever way the soul wishes to eat, it will find flavor and consolation in the most holy Sacrament. There is no need, hardship, or persecution that isn't easy to endure if we begin to take pleasure in His gifts. Ask, daughters, with this Lord to the Father that He may allow you "today" to be with your Spouse, so that you do not find yourselves in this world without Him; let it be enough to temper such great joy, that it remains so disguised in these appearances of bread and wine, which is a great torment for anyone who has nothing else to love or any other comfort; but plead with Him that you may not lack and that He may give you the means to receive Him worthily. Don't worry about other bread, you who have truly entrusted yourselves to the will of God; I say this in these times of prayer, when you are dealing with more important matters, for there are other times for you to work and earn your food. But don't let your concern waste your thoughts at any time; rather, let your body work, for it is good for you to provide for yourselves, while your soul should find rest. Leave that concern, as has been discussed at length, to your Spouse, for He will always take care of it.

The Master in the House of the Soul

The soul is encouraged to treat the Eucharist as a living encounter with the Master, who provides for His servants and heals their ailments.

It's like a servant coming in to serve; he has to make sure to please his master in everything. Yet the master is obligated to provide food for the servant while he is in his house serving him, unless the master is so poor that he has nothing for himself or for his servant. This is where it ends; it is always rich and powerful. It wouldn't be right for the servant to go around asking for food, since he knows his master is concerned with providing it for him. So he will rightly tell him to focus on serving him and how to please him, because by being preoccupied with what he shouldn't be concerned about, he doesn't do anything right. So, sisters, let whoever wishes take care to ask for that bread; let us ask the Eternal Father that we may be worthy to receive our heavenly bread, so that, since the eyes of the body cannot delight in seeing it because it is so hidden, it may be revealed to the eyes of the soul and made known to us, for it is another sustenance of joy and gifts that supports life. Do you think this most holy food isn't nourishment for these bodies, and a great remedy for bodily ailments? I know it is, and I know someone who had serious illnesses that, many times, were taken away as if by hand during severe pain, and they were completely healed. In my opinion, this is very common, and it involves well-known ailments that couldn't be faked. And because of the wonders that this most holy Bread works in those who receive it worthily, they are very notable; I won’t mention many that I could say about this person I mentioned, which I could know, and I know it’s not a lie. But this person had such a lively faith given by the Lord that when she heard people say they wished they could have been alive when Christ our good was in the world, she would laugh to herself, thinking that since they have Him truly in the Most Holy Sacrament just as they did then, what more could they want? But I know about this person who, for many years, although she wasn't very perfect, when she received Communion, she would strive to strengthen her faith as if she were seeing the Lord enter her humble dwelling with her bodily eyes. She would try to gather her senses so that everyone could understand such a great gift, and she would say that they shouldn't burden their souls in order to know Him. She would consider herself at His feet and weep with Mary Magdalene, just as if she were seeing Him with her bodily eyes in the house of the Pharisee. And even if she didn't feel devotion, her faith told her that it was good to be there. Because if we don’t want to be foolish and blind our understanding, we shouldn’t doubt; this is not just a representation of the imagination, like when we consider the Lord on the cross or in other moments of the Passion, where we represent Him within ourselves as He passed. This happens now and is entirely true, and there’s no need to go looking for Him elsewhere; rather, since we know that as long as the natural heat doesn’t consume the accidents of the bread, the good Jesus is with us, we should approach Him. For if when He walked in the world, just touching His garments healed the sick, what is there to doubt that He will work miracles being so deeply within me, if we have faith, and He will give us what we ask of Him, since He is in our house? And His Majesty doesn’t usually repay poorly for hospitality if they offer Him good lodging.

Seeing the Lord with the Eyes of the Soul

Teresa instructs the sisters to look past the 'disguise' of the Sacrament by opening the eyes of the soul to the real presence of Christ within.

If you're saddened by not seeing Him with your physical eyes, remember that it's not fitting; it's one thing to see Him glorified, and another to see Him when He walked the earth. There wouldn't be anyone who could endure that, given our frail nature, nor would there be a world or anyone who would want to remain in it; for in seeing this eternal truth, all the things we care about here would seem like lies and mockery. And seeing such great majesty, how would a little sinner like me, who has offended Him so much, dare to be so close to Him? Under that bread, He is approachable; for if the King disguises Himself, it doesn't seem like He would allow us to converse without so many formalities and respects with Him; it seems He is obliged to endure it, for He has disguised Himself. Who would dare to approach with such lukewarmness, so unworthily, and with so many imperfections? Oh, how little we know what we're asking for, and how much better His wisdom sees it! For those who see Him must benefit from His presence; He reveals Himself to them, for even if they do not see Him with their bodily eyes, He has many ways to show Himself to the soul through deep inner feelings and various means. Be with Him willingly. Don't lose such a good opportunity to engage with Him as it is right after you have received Communion. If obedience commands you, sisters, to do something else, make sure to leave your soul with the Lord; for if you then turn your thoughts elsewhere and pay no attention to Him who is within you, how will He be made known to you? This, then, is a good time for our Master to teach you, for you to listen to Him and kiss His feet, because He wanted to teach us, and you should plead that He does not depart from you. If this is what you’re asking for while looking at an image of Christ that we’re seeing, it seems foolish to leave the very person to look at the drawing. Wouldn’t it be foolish if we had a portrait of someone we loved dearly and the very person came to visit us, to stop talking to them and have all our conversation with the portrait? Do you know when it's truly good and a source of great delight? When the same person is absent, or wants to convey something to us through many drynesses, it is a great gift to see an image of the one we love so dearly. At every moment we turn our eyes, we would want to see them. In what better or more pleasing sight can we employ our gaze than in the one who loves us so much and who has all good things within themselves? Wretched are those heretics who have lost this consolation through their own fault, along with others. But once you've received the Lord, since you have the same person before you, try to close your bodily eyes and open the eyes of your soul and look into your heart; for I tell you, and I say it again, and I would say it many times, that if you take this habit every time you receive Communion, and strive to have such a conscience that it is lawful for you to enjoy this good often, it does not come so disguised that, as I have said, it does not reveal itself in many ways, according to the desire we have to see Him. And you can desire it so much that it may be fully revealed to you. But if we ignore Him, and instead of receiving Him, we go off to seek other lesser things, what will He do? Are we to force ourselves to see Him when He wants to reveal Himself to us? No, they didn't treat Him well when He revealed Himself openly to everyone and clearly told them who He was; very few believed in Him. And so, in great mercy, He makes it clear to all of us that His Majesty wants us to understand that He is present in the Most Holy Sacrament. But He only wants those to see Him openly and to share His greatness and give from His treasures who He knows truly desire Him, for these are His true friends. I tell you that whoever does not approach Him and does not come to receive Him as such, having done what is required of them, should never bother Him to reveal Himself. He does not see the time to have fulfilled what the Church commands when he leaves his house and tries to push Him away. So this person, caught up in other business and worldly distractions, seems to hurry as fast as they can to ensure that the Lord does not occupy their house.
