The Importance of Intentional Prayer

Teresa emphasizes that we must understand what we ask for in prayer, as our requests reflect our relationship with God and our own spiritual maturity.

Who is there, no matter how foolish they may be, who, when asking something of a serious person, doesn’t think about how to ask it in a way that pleases them and isn’t rude, what they should ask for, and why they need what they’re asking to be given, especially if they’re asking for something specific, as our good Jesus teaches us to ask? It seems worth noting to me. Could You not, my Lord, conclude with a single word and say: 'Give us, Father, what is fitting for us,' since to One who understands everything so well, it doesn't seem necessary to ask for more? Oh, Eternal Wisdom! For between You and Your Father, it was enough that you asked for it in the garden; you showed your will and fear, but you left yourselves in His. But as for us, You know, my Lord, that we aren't as surrendered as You were to the will of Your Father. It was necessary for us to ask for specific things so that we might pause to see if what we ask for is truly good for us, and if it isn't, that we should not ask for it. Because, as we are, if we don’t get what we want, with this free will we have, we won’t accept what the Lord gives us; because even if it’s the best, since we don’t see the money in hand right away, we never think we’ll see ourselves rich. Oh, how can our faith be so asleep regarding both this and that, that we can't even understand how certain we will be of punishment or how certain we will be of reward! That's why, daughters, it's important for you to understand what you ask for in the Our Father, so that if the Eternal Father grants it to you, you won't turn it back to Him, and you should think very carefully about whether it's good for you, and if not, don't ask for it; instead, ask Him to give you His Majesty light; because we are blind and weary, unable to eat the food that will give you life, but only that which will lead you to death, and what a dangerous and everlasting death that is!

The Kingdom Within

By asking for God's kingdom to come, we seek a foretaste of heavenly peace and stillness even while living in this earthly exile.

So, our good Jesus tells us to pray these words, asking for that kingdom to come within us: "Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come to us." Now look, daughters, at the great wisdom of our Master. I consider here, and it's good that we understand what we are asking in this kingdom. But since His Majesty saw that we could not sanctify, praise, exalt, or glorify this holy name of the Eternal Father according to the little we can do, in such a way that it would be reasonable, if His Majesty did not provide us with His kingdom here, He placed the good Jesus' teaching that one thing leads to another, so that we may understand, daughters, what we are asking, and what it matters to insist on this and do all we can to please the one who is to give it to us. I want to tell you here what I understand. If I don't satisfy you, think of other considerations that our Master will allow us, as we submit to what the Church has, and that's what I do here. The great good I see in the kingdom of heaven, among many others, is that there’s no longer any concern for earthly matters. Instead, there is peace and glory within, a joy shared by everyone, a perpetual peace, and a deep satisfaction that comes from seeing that all sanctify and praise the Lord and bless His name, with no one offending Him. Everyone loves Him, and the very soul understands nothing but to love Him, nor can it stop loving Him, because it knows Him. And so we would love Him here, even if not in this perfection, nor in being; but in a very different way we would love Him than we do now, if we truly knew Him. It sounds like I'm saying we must be like angels to make this request and to pray well out loud. Our divine Master would indeed want this, for He commands us to ask for such a high request, and surely He doesn't tell us to ask for impossible things; it would be possible, with God's favor, for a soul in this exile to come, even if not in the perfection that those who have left this prison enjoy, because we walk in the sea and follow this path; yet there are times when, tired from walking, the Lord puts them in a calm of their powers and a stillness of the soul, which, like signs, clearly shows them what it is like to receive what the Lord gives to those He leads to His kingdom. And to those who receive here as we ask, He gives tokens so that through them they may have great hope of going to enjoy perpetually what He gives them here in sips.

Vocal Prayer as a Gateway to Contemplation

Teresa defends the power of vocal prayer, demonstrating that it can lead to deep contemplation and union with God for those who pray with a clean conscience.

If you weren't saying that I'm talking about contemplation, it would be appropriate to speak a bit about the beginning of pure contemplation in this request, since those who have it call it the prayer of quiet. But as I say, I'm addressing vocal prayer; it seems that one doesn't come with the other to those who don't know it, and I know that it does. Forgive me for wanting to mention this, because I know that many people, while praying vocally—as has already been noted—are lifted by God, without understanding how, into a higher contemplation. I know a person who could never have anything but vocal prayer, and holding onto that, she had everything. And if she didn't pray, her mind would become so lost that she couldn't bear it. But let us have such a mental prayer! In certain Paternosters that she prayed at the times when the Lord shed His blood, she was in a state of prayer—and in a little more, she prayed for several hours. Once, she came to me very distressed, saying she didn't know how to practice mental prayer nor could she contemplate, but could only pray vocally. I asked her what she was praying, and I saw that, holding onto the Our Father, she had pure contemplation, and the Lord lifted her up to join her with Himself in unity; and it was evident in her actions that she received such great graces because she spent her life very well. So, I praised the Lord and envied her vocal prayer. If this is true—and it is—don’t think, you who are enemies of the contemplatives, that you are free from being one if you pray vocal prayers as you should, with a clean conscience.
