Seeking the Lord Within

Teresa encourages her sisters to look past human approval and find their true reward in the indwelling presence of God.

Hurry, for the love of God, daughters, and don't expect to receive any of these favors. Each of you should strive to do what you ought to do, for if the prelate doesn't appreciate it, you can be sure the Lord will reward and acknowledge it. Yes, we didn't come here to seek rewards in this life. Always keep your thoughts on what lasts, and don't let anything from here distract you, for even what is lived isn't lasting; today it may be well with one person, but tomorrow, if He sees more virtue in you, He will be even better with you, and if not, it won't matter much. Don't give room to these thoughts, which can start small but can greatly unsettle you; instead, cut them off by remembering that this is not your kingdom and how quickly everything comes to an end. But even this is a minor remedy, and not much of a perfection. The best thing is to endure, even if you feel disadvantaged and downcast, and to want to endure for the Lord who is with you. Fix your eyes on yourself and look inward, as has been said; you'll find your Master, who won't fail you. In fact, the less external consolation you have, the more gifts He'll give you. He is deeply compassionate and never fails those who are afflicted and disadvantaged, provided they trust in Him alone. As David says, the Lord is with the afflicted. Either you believe this or you don't. If you do believe it, why are you killing yourselves? Oh my Lord, if we truly knew You, we wouldn’t be given anything at all, because You give so much to those who truly trust in You! Believe me, friends, it’s a great thing to understand this truth, to see that all the favors from here are lies when they divert the soul even a little from walking within itself. Oh, for heaven's sake, God, who could make you understand this! Certainly not I. I know that I, more than anyone, have yet to understand it as it should be understood.

The Practice of Interior Recollection

A practical guide to the method of interior recollection, where the soul withdraws into itself to commune with God without the need for complex vocal prayer.

So, returning to what I was saying, I’d like to know how this holy company is with our companion, the Holy of Holies, without hindering the solitude that she and her Spouse have when this soul within herself wants to enter this paradise with her God, and closes the door behind her to everything in the world. I say 'wants' because you should understand that this isn't something supernatural; it lies within our will, and we can do it with God’s grace, for without it we can do nothing, nor can we have a good thought on our own. This isn't a silence of the powers; it is the soul enclosing them within itself. We gain this in many ways; as it is written in various books, we must free ourselves from everything to draw near to God internally, and even in our daily tasks, we should withdraw into ourselves. Even if it's just for a moment, that awareness of having company within me is a great benefit. Ultimately, we should get used to the idea that it’s not necessary to raise our voices to speak to Him, because His Majesty will make His presence felt there. In this way, we will pray with great calmness, which means stepping away from our work. If we force ourselves to stay close to the Lord for a little while, He will understand us through signs; even if we were to say the Lord's Prayer many times, He will understand us with just one. He is very much a friend of taking us away from work. Even if in one hour we don't say more than once, as we understand we are with Him and what we ask of Him and how eager He is to give to us, and how gladly He is with us, He is not a friend of us breaking our heads by talking too much. May the Lord teach those of you who don't know it, for I confess to you that I never understood what it meant to pray with satisfaction until the Lord taught me this way. And I have always found so many benefits from this practice of interior recollection that it has made me extend my time in it. I conclude that whoever wishes to acquire it—since, as I say, it is in our hands—should not tire of getting used to what has been said, which is to gradually take control of oneself, not losing oneself in vain; but rather to gain oneself for oneself, which means to make use of one's senses for the interior. If you speak, remember that there is someone within you with whom you are speaking. If you listen, remember that you must hear the one who speaks to you most closely. Finally, keep in mind that you can, if you wish, never separate yourself from such good company, and feel regret when you have left your Father alone for a long time, who is in need of you. If you can, do this many times a day; if not, let it be a few. As you get used to it, you'll gain from it, whether sooner or later.

The Fruit of Perseverance

Teresa concludes with an exhortation to persevere in this practice, promising that the effort will lead to a deep and lasting union with the Lord.

Once the Lord gives it to you, you wouldn't trade it for any treasure. Nothing comes without a bit of effort, for the love of God, sisters, so that you may consider the care you spend on this well employed. And I know that if you have it, within a year, or perhaps even sooner, you will achieve it, with God's favor. Consider how little time it takes for such great gain as to lay a good foundation, should the Lord wish to raise you to great things, finding you prepared and close to Him. May it please His Majesty not to allow us to be separated from His presence, amen.
