The Indwelling King

God dwells within the soul as in a palace, and we should approach Him with the intimacy of a daughter rather than with false, shrinking humility.

Now consider what your Master says: "You are in heaven." Do you think it matters little to know what heaven is and where to find your most holy Father? I tell you that for scattered minds, it matters a great deal—not only to believe this, but to strive to understand it through experience. Because it is one of those things that greatly binds the mind and helps to gather the soul. You already know that God is everywhere. It’s clear that wherever the king is, the court is said to be. In short, wherever God is, that is heaven. You can be certain that wherever His Majesty is, all glory is present. So look, Saint Augustine says that he sought Him in many places and found Him within himself. Do you think it matters little for a poured-out soul to understand this truth and see that it doesn’t need to go to heaven to speak with its Eternal Father, nor to enjoy His presence, nor does it need to speak aloud? Even if it speaks, He is so close that He will hear us. It doesn’t need wings to go seek Him; it only needs to find solitude and look within itself. It shouldn't be surprised by such a good guest, but with great humility, it should speak to Him as to a father, ask Him as a father, tell Him its troubles, and ask Him for remedies, all while understanding that it is not worthy to be His daughter. Let go of the kind of shrinking back that some people mistake for humility. Humility isn't about refusing a favor from the King when He offers it; rather, it’s about accepting it, understanding how generous it is, and being glad for it. What a lovely humility it is to have the Emperor of heaven and earth in my home, coming to me to grant me a favor and to enjoy my company, and yet, out of humility, I won’t respond to him, stay with him, or accept what he gives me, but instead, I’ll leave him alone. And while I’m standing there, saying and begging, I should ask him, out of humility, to let me remain poor, and even let him go, since I see that I can’t make up my mind! Don’t concern yourselves, daughters, with those kinds of humility. Instead, treat Him as a Father, a Brother, a Lord, and a Spouse—sometimes in one way, sometimes in another—for He will teach you how to please Him. Stop being foolish; ask Him for the word, for your Spouse is one who treats you as such.

The Practice of Recollection

Recollection is a powerful method of prayer that gathers the soul's faculties inward, allowing for a swifter and more profound union with God.

This way of praying, even if it's vocal, gathers the understanding much more briefly, and it's a prayer that brings many benefits. It's called recollection because it gathers all the powers of the soul and enters within itself with its God, and it comes more quickly to be taught by its divine Master and to receive a prayer of quietude, more than in any other way. Because there, immersed within herself, she can think about the Passion and represent the Son there and offer Him to the Father without tiring her understanding by searching in the mountain of Calvary and in the garden and at the pillar. Those who can enclose themselves in this small heaven of our soul, where the one who made it is present, and the earth, and who get used to not looking or being where these external senses get distracted, can be sure they're on an excellent path and will not fail to reach the water of the fountain, because they travel far in a short time. It’s like someone on a ship who, with a favorable wind, reaches the end of the journey in just a few days, while those traveling by land take much longer. They are already, as they say, set out to sea; for although they haven't completely left the land, for that moment they do what they can to free themselves from it, gathering their senses back to themselves. If the recollection is genuine, it should be very clear to you, because it accomplishes something. I don't know how to make that clear. Whoever possesses it will surely understand. It seems that the soul is lifted up with joy, for it already sees the things of the world. Lift yourself at the best time, like someone entering a stronghold to fear no opposition: withdraw your senses from these external things and manage them in such a way that, without realizing it, your eyes are closed to not see them, because the sight of the soul is awakened even more. Thus, whoever walks this path almost always has their eyes closed when they pray, and it is an admirable practice for many things, because it is a way of forcing oneself not to look at what is here. This is at the beginning, for later it is not necessary; it becomes more significant when at that time it opens them. It seems that the soul understands how to strengthen and strive at the expense of the body, leaving it alone and weakened, while it takes nourishment there to counteract it. And even though at first this may not be understood, because there is more and less in this recollection, if one gets used to it (even though it may take effort at first, since the body returns to its natural state, not realizing that it is cutting off its own head by refusing to yield), if it is practiced for a few days and we build this strength, the gain will become clear, and they will understand that when they begin to pray, the bees come to the hive and enter it to make honey, and this happens without our effort; for the Lord has willed that during the time they have been present, the soul and will have deserved to be with this lordship, so that by making a sign that one wishes to recollect, the senses obey and gather to it. And even if they wander off later, it is a great thing that they have already surrendered, because they leave like captives and subjects, unable to do the harm they might have done before. As you begin to call the will back, they return with greater speed, until the Lord wills for them to remain completely in perfect contemplation at many of these entrances. Understand this well, because although it may seem unclear, it will be understood by anyone who wishes to act on it. So they walk on the sea; and since it matters so much to us, let’s not go so slowly; let’s talk a bit about how we’ll get used to such a good way of proceeding. They are more secure in many situations; the fire of divine love attaches itself more quickly, because with just a little breath from the understanding—since they are close to the same fire—even a tiny spark that touches them will set everything ablaze. Since there is no distraction from the outside, the soul is alone with its God: there is great opportunity for understanding.

The Palace of the Soul

We must visualize our soul as a magnificent palace where the King resides, keeping it clean and surrendered so that He may dwell there without hindrance.

Imagine that inside you is a palace of immense wealth, built entirely of gold and precious stones, as befits such a Lord. You are part of what makes this building what it is, for there is no structure as beautiful as a clean soul filled with virtues; the greater the virtues, the more brightly the stones shine. In this palace is this great King, who has graciously chosen to be your Father, and He sits on a throne of immense value: your heart. At first, this may seem like an irrelevant thing to say — I mean, creating this fiction to help understand — and it might actually benefit you a lot, especially since, as women, we don’t have much education; all of this is necessary for us to truly understand that there is something far more precious within us than what we see on the outside. Let’s not imagine ourselves as hollow on the inside. And may God grant that only women walk around with this carelessness; for I find it impossible that if we were to take care to remember that we have such a guest within us, we would give ourselves so much to the things of the world, because we would see how lowly they are compared to what we possess inside. For what difference is there between a beast that, seeing what pleases its eyes, satisfies its hunger with the prey? Yes, there must be a difference between them and us. People might laugh at me and say this is obvious, and they’d be right; for a time, it was dark to me. I understood well that I had a soul; but what this soul deserved and who was within it, if I did not cover my eyes with the vanities of life to see it, I did not understand. For, in my opinion, if I now understand that such a great King can dwell in this little palace of my soul, I should not leave Him alone so many times; I should stay with Him, and strive to keep it clean. But it is truly amazing that He who could fill a thousand worlds and more with His greatness would confine Himself to something so small! Truly, as He is Lord, He brings freedom with Him, and because He loves us, He adapts Himself to our measure. When a soul begins, it doesn't want to be disturbed by seeing itself as so small while holding something so great within; it doesn't reveal itself until it gradually expands, according to what is needed for what it must contain. For this reason, I say that it brings freedom with it, because it has the power to make this palace great. The whole point is that we give it to Him as His own with complete determination, and we clear it out so that He can put in and take out as if it were His own. His Majesty is right; let's not deny it. And since He won't force our will, He takes what we give Him, but He doesn't fully give Himself until we give ourselves completely. This is a certain thing, and because it matters so much, I remind you of it so many times: neither does He work in the soul as when it is entirely His without hindrance, nor do I know how He is to work; He is a friend of all harmony. For if we fill the palace with lowly people and trinkets, how can the Lord fit in with His court? It's quite enough to be a little among so much hindrance. Do you think, daughters, that He comes alone? Don't you see that His Son says, 'You are in the heavens'? . For such a King, who is not left alone by His courtiers, but who has them with Him, pleading for all of us for our benefit, because they are filled with charity. Don't think it's like here, where if a lord or prelate favors someone for some reason, or because he wants to, then there are envies and that poor man is made to suffer without doing anything to them.
