The Abundant Fountain of Prayer
God provides diverse paths and abundant consolation for all who seek Him in prayer, ensuring no one dies of thirst.
It seems that I contradict myself in this previous chapter regarding what I said; because, when I was comforting those who hadn’t arrived here, I said that the Lord had different paths by which they were going to Him, just as there were many dwelling places. So now I return to say this; because, as His Majesty understood our weakness, He provided as only He can. But He didn’t say, 'Let some come by this path and others by that one'; rather, His mercy was so great that He didn’t stop anyone from seeking to come to this fountain of life to drink. Blessed be He forever; how right it would be for Him to take that away from me! For He didn't command me to abandon it when I began, and He made sure I was thrown into the depths, surely not to take it away from anyone; rather, He publicly calls us out loud. But because He is so good, He doesn't force us. Instead, He offers many ways for those who want to follow Him to drink, so that no one leaves in despair or dies of thirst. Streams flow from this abundant fountain—some large, some small, and sometimes little puddles for children that are just enough for them. Seeing a vast amount of water would only frighten those who are just beginning. So, sisters, don't be afraid that you'll die of thirst on this path. There is never a lack of water for consolation, no matter how lacking one may be that it cannot be endured. And since this is the case, take my advice and don't stay on the path, but fight like strong ones until you die in the struggle, for you are not here for anything else but to fight. And always go with this determination to die rather than to stop reaching the end of the path; if the Lord carries you with some thirst in this life, in which it is forever, He will give you abundantly to drink without fear of it running out. I pray to the Lord that we may not fail Him. Amen.
The Importance of Beginning
Starting the path of prayer is of utmost importance, and even small steps yield great spiritual rewards.
Now, to begin this journey that has been mentioned in such a way that no one goes astray from the start, let’s discuss a bit about how to commence this path, because this is what matters most; I say it matters everything for everything. I’m not saying that anyone who lacks the determination I’m about to describe should refrain from starting, because the Lord will perfect them. Even if they only take one step, they possess so much virtue that there’s no need to fear losing it or worry that it won’t be well rewarded. Think of it like someone who has a rosary of pardons; if they pray it once, they gain something, and the more they pray it, the more they gain. But if they never reach it, but only keep it in the box, it would be better not to have it at all. So, even if they don’t continue on that same path later, the little they’ve walked will give them light to proceed well on others, and the more they walk, the more they will gain. In the end, be assured that starting will not harm you in any way, even if you stop, because good never does harm. For this reason, all the people who interact with you, daughters, having a disposition and some friendship, should help remove the fear of starting such a great good. And for the love of God, I ask that your interactions always be directed toward some good for those you speak to, for your prayer should be for the benefit of souls. And since this is what you should always ask of the Lord, sisters, it would seem wrong not to seek it in every way possible.
Holy Conversations and Spiritual Integrity
True friendship and conversation among religious must be rooted in God, avoiding worldly distractions to maintain the soul's peace.
If you want to be a good relative, this is true friendship. If you want to be a good friend, understand that you can't be one except by following this path. Let the truth dwell in your hearts through meditation, and you'll clearly see the love we are obligated to have for our neighbors. It's no longer time, sisters, for childish games, which seem nothing more than these friendships of the world, even if they are good; nor should there be among you such talk of 'if you love me,' 'if you don't love me,' neither with relatives nor anyone else, unless it is founded on a great purpose and benefit for that soul. What may happen is that your relative, brother, or similar person might hear a truth and accept it, which requires you to engage in these conversations and demonstrations of love that always please the senses; and it will be more beneficial to have a good word—what they call a good word—than to have many from God, so that later these may fit. And so, going with caution to make the most of it, I don't take them away. But if it’s not for that purpose, they can bring no benefit, and they may cause harm without you even realizing it. You already know that you are religious and that your way of life is one of prayer. Don't let it be said: 'I don't want them to think I'm good,' because what they see in you can either be beneficial or harmful. It's a great harm to those who have such an obligation to speak only of God, like the nuns, if they think it's acceptable to pretend in this case, unless it’s sometimes for a greater good. This is your way of speaking and relating; whoever wants to engage with you, let them; but if not, guard yourselves from adopting their way: it will lead to hell. If they consider you rude, it doesn't matter much; if they think you're a hypocrite, it matters even less. You'll gain from this that no one will see you except those who understand this language. Because no one can follow a path who doesn't know how to enjoy talking a lot with someone who doesn't understand another language. And so, neither will they tire you nor harm you, for it would be no small harm to start speaking a new language, and all your time would be spent on that. And you can't know as I do, having experienced it, the great harm it is for the soul, because by knowing one, you forget the other, and it is a perpetual unrest from which you must flee in every way. For what is most beneficial to the path we are beginning to discuss is peace and tranquility in the soul. If those who speak to you want to learn your language, since it's not your place to teach, you can mention the riches gained from learning it. Don't grow weary of this; instead, approach it with piety, love, and prayer so that it may be beneficial. Once you understand the great gain, you may seek a teacher to instruct you, for it would be no small grace if the Lord were to awaken some soul for this good. But how many things are offered when one begins to discuss this path, even to someone who has walked it as poorly as I have! I pray the Lord to help you say it better than I have, amen.
