The Game of Prayer

Teresa introduces the metaphor of chess to explain the necessity of virtues as the foundation for a life of prayer.

And don't let all this seem too much to you, as I'm starting to lay out the game, as they say. You asked me to explain the beginning of prayer; I, daughters, although God did not lead me by this beginning, because I still do not owe having these virtues, do not know another. So believe that whoever does not know how to coordinate the pieces in the game of chess will play poorly, and if they do not know how to give check, they will not know how to deliver checkmate. Thus you should reprimand me because I speak about something like a game, not having it in this house nor having it to have. Here you see the mother God gave you, who even knew about this vanity; though they say it is sometimes permissible. And how permissible this way of playing will be for us, and how quickly, if we practice it often, we will deliver checkmate to this divine King, who will not slip from our hands, nor will He want to. The queen is the piece that can cause him the most trouble in this game, and all the other pieces help. No piece can make him yield like humility. This was brought to him from heaven in the womb of the Virgin, and with her, we will bring it to our souls by a single hair. Believe that whoever has more will have more, and whoever has less will have less. I don't understand how there can be humility without love, or love without humility; nor is it possible to have these two virtues without a great detachment from all created things. You might say, my daughters, "Why do I speak to you about virtues when you have plenty of books that teach them, and all you want is contemplation?" -I say that even if you were to ask for meditation, I could speak about it and advise everyone to have it, even if they lack virtues; because it is the beginning of attaining all virtues, and it is something that concerns our very lives to start it, all Christians, and no one, no matter how lost they may be, if God awakens them to such great good, will abandon it, as I have already written elsewhere, and many others who know what they write, which I certainly do not know; God knows.

Contemplation vs. Mental Prayer

The author distinguishes between basic mental prayer and true contemplation, emphasizing that the latter requires a total surrender to God.

But contemplation is something else, daughters; this is the deception we all carry: that when someone takes a moment each day to think about their sins (which they are obliged to do if they are a Christian in more than name), they then claim to be very contemplative, and they expect them to possess the great virtues that a truly contemplative person is obliged to have, and even they want it for themselves, but they are mistaken. In the beginning, they didn’t know how to play the game: they thought it was enough to know the pieces to checkmate, and it’s impossible, for this King is not checkmated except by one who gives themselves completely. So, daughters, if you want me to explain the way to reach contemplation, please bear with me if I spend a little time on certain matters. They might not seem important to you later, but in my view, they aren't without significance. And if you don’t want to hear or act on these things, you can stick with your mental prayer for your whole life, but I assure you and all those who seek this good (I may be mistaken, as I judge from my own experience over twenty years) that you won’t reach true contemplation. I want to explain now—because some of you may not understand—what mental prayer is, and may God grant that we hold it as we should; but I also fear that it requires a lot of effort if we don't strive for the virtues, even if not to such a high degree as is necessary for contemplation. I say that the King of Glory will not come to our soul—I mean, to be united with it—if we don't strive to gain the great virtues. I want to declare this because if you take me for saying something that is not true, you won't believe anything, and you would have reason to do so if it were with warning; but may God not give me such a place; it would be not knowing more, or not understanding it. I mean to say, then, that sometimes God may want to grant such a great favor to people who are in a bad state, in order to pull them out of the devil's hands through this means. Oh my Lord, how often do we make you walk hand in hand with the devil! Would it not have been enough for you to be taken by them when you were brought to the pinnacle, to teach us how to overcome him? But what would it be like, daughters, to see darkness alongside that Sun, and what fear would that unfortunate one feel without knowing why, since God didn't allow him to understand it! Blessed be such mercy and compassion; how ashamed we Christians should be to make him walk every day hand in hand with such a filthy beast, as I have said. It was indeed necessary, Lord, that you should have them so strong; but how could you not have remained weak from so many torments as you endured on the cross? Oh, that everything we endure with love would be healed! And so I believe that if you remain alive, the same love you have for us will heal your wounds, so that no other medicine would be needed. Oh my God, and who would place such a thing in all things, that they would give me pain and toil! Oh, how gladly I would desire them if I could be certain of being healed with such a healthy balm!

God's Initiative and Our Response

Teresa explains how God sometimes grants favors to the unprepared to draw them toward Him, and the soul's duty to respond with determination.

To return to my point, there are souls that God knows can be won over to Him through this means. Since He sees them completely lost, His Majesty doesn't want to abandon them; even though they are in a bad state and lacking in virtues, He gives them delights, gifts, and tenderness that begin to stir their desires, and sometimes He even brings them into contemplation, though rarely and for a short time. And this, as I say, He does to test them to see if with that favor they will want to prepare themselves to enjoy Him many times. But if they don't prepare themselves—forgive us, or rather, forgive me, Lord—it is truly wrong for You to approach a soul like this, only for her to then turn back and cling to something of the earth. I believe there are many people with whom our Lord God tests this, and few who prepare themselves to enjoy this grace; for when the Lord grants it and does not hold back from us, I am certain He never stops giving until He brings us to a very high state. When we do not give ourselves to His Majesty with the determination that He gives Himself to us, He does enough by leaving us in mental prayer and visiting us from time to time, like servants who are in His vineyard. But these others are beloved children; He wouldn’t want to remove them from His presence; nor does He take them away, because they do not want to leave; He seats them at His table, gives them from what He eats, until He takes the morsel from His mouth to give it to them. Oh, blessed care, my daughters! Oh, how blessed it is to let go of such few and lowly things, which leads to such a great state! Consider what will be given to you while you are in the arms of God, even if the whole world accuses you. He is powerful enough to free you from everything; once He commanded the world to be made, it was created: His will is action. So don't be afraid, for if it isn't for the greater good of the one who loves Him, let the world speak against you: He doesn't love those who love Him so little. So why, my sisters, shouldn't we show Him our love as much as we can? Look, it is a beautiful exchange to give our love for His. Look, He can do everything, and here we can do nothing except what He enables us to do. So what is this that we do for You, Lord, our Creator? It’s really nothing—just a small determination. If what is nothing is what Your Majesty wants us to deserve everything, then let’s not be foolish.

Holy Boldness on the Path

The chapter concludes with an exhortation to keep one's eyes on the true path and to cultivate a holy boldness in seeking perfection.

Oh Lord! All the harm comes from not keeping our eyes on You; if we focused only on the path, we’d arrive quickly; but we stumble and fall a thousand times and miss the way because we don’t keep our eyes — as I say — on the true path. It seems like we’ve never walked it, as it feels new to us. It’s indeed painful when that happens sometimes. For even the slightest touch of being less is unbearable, and it doesn’t seem like it can be endured; then they say: 'We are not saints!' . May God protect us, sisters, when we do something imperfect, from saying: 'We are not angels,' 'We are not saints.' Look, even though we’re not, it’s a great good to think that if we strive, we could be, with God lending us a hand; and don’t fear that anything will be lacking from Him, if it doesn’t remain lacking from us. And since we haven't come here for anything else, let's get to work, as they say: let's not understand anything in which the Lord is served more than we presume to accomplish it with His favor. This presumption I would like to have in this house, which always fosters humility: to have a holy boldness, for God helps the strong and does not show favoritism. I've had a lot of fun. I want to return to what I was saying, which is to explain what mental prayer and contemplation are. It may seem irrelevant, but for you all, everything passes; you might understand it better from my rough style than from others that are more elegant. May the Lord grant me favor for this, amen.

Mucho me he divertido.
