The Thief Within
True detachment requires guarding against the internal thief of self-will rather than just external worldly concerns.
By freeing ourselves from the world and from our loved ones, and being confined here by the conditions already mentioned, it seems we've done everything and that there’s nothing left to fight against. Oh, my sisters! So don’t let yourselves feel secure or fall asleep, for it would be like someone who lies down peacefully after locking their doors for fear of thieves, yet leaves the thieves inside the house. And you already know that there’s no worse thief than ourselves. If we don’t proceed with great care—and if each of us doesn’t pay close attention to contradicting our own will, as if it were the most important matter of all—there are many things that can take away this holy freedom of spirit, which should be able to soar to its Creator without being weighed down by earth and lead. A great remedy for this is to keep the vanity of everything constantly in mind and how quickly it fades away, so we can rid ourselves of attachments to such trivial things and focus on what will never end. And although it seems a weak method, it greatly strengthens the soul, and in very small matters, it brings great care; by becoming attached to something, we should strive to turn our thoughts away from it and back to God, and His Majesty helps us. And they have done us a great favor, for in this house, the most important work is done, since this turning away from ourselves and being against ourselves is a difficult task, because we are very close together and love each other a lot.
The Sisters of the Soul
Humility and mortification are the inseparable virtues that empower the soul to overcome the world and the devil.
This is where true humility can enter, because this virtue and the other seem to always go together. They are two sisters that shouldn't be separated. These aren't the relatives I advise you to separate from, but rather to embrace, love, and never be without. Oh sovereign virtues, ladies of all creation, empresses of the world, liberators from all the bonds and entanglements that the devil puts forth, so beloved by our teacher Christ, that never has a moment been seen without them! Whoever possesses them can certainly go out and fight against all of hell, the whole world, and its temptations. Let no one fear, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. No one has anything to fear, for nothing is given to them that they might lose everything, nor do they consider it a loss; they only fear displeasing their God; and they ask Him to sustain them in these virtues so they do not lose them through their own fault. It's true that these virtues have such a quality that they hide from those who possess them, so that they never see them or truly believe they have any, even if someone tells them they do; yet they hold onto them to the extent that they are always striving to possess them and perfect them within themselves, even though those who have them are clearly marked by them; then it becomes evident to those who interact with them, without their wanting it. But how foolish it is for me to praise humility and mortification when they are so praised by the King of Glory and confirmed by so many of His works! So, my daughters, here is the work of leaving the land of Egypt; in finding them, you will find the manna; everything will taste good to you; even if it has a bad flavor to those of the world, it will become sweet to you.
The Trap of Self-Indulgence
The devil uses the guise of health and discretion to lure religious into avoiding the very sacrifices they vowed to make.
Now, the first thing we need to strive for is to rid ourselves of the love for this body, as some of us are so indulgent with our nature that there's quite a bit of work to do here, and we are so attached to our health that it’s truly praiseworthy to God the struggle we put up, especially among nuns, and even among those who are not. But it seems some nuns enter the monastery for no other reason than to try not to die. Each one tries as best she can. Here, in truth, there’s little room for that with the work, but I wouldn’t want to have the desire. Sisters, determine that you come to die for Christ, and not to indulge yourselves for Christ; for this is what the devil suggests, saying that it’s to carry and keep the Order; and so much is it desired to keep the Order by seeking health to guard and preserve it, that one can die without fully fulfilling it for a month, or perhaps even a day. For I don’t know what we come for. Don't be afraid; let discretion not fail us in this case out of wonder, for then the confessors fear we must kill ourselves with penances. And this lack of discretion is so detestable to us that we would fulfill everything. I know that those who do the opposite won't be rewarded for saying this, nor will I be for my judgment, because they are speaking the truth. I think the Lord wants us to be more sickly; at the very least, He has shown me great mercy by making me this way, because if He was going to indulge me like that, He must have had a reason. For it is a lovely thing for those who walk with this torment that they inflict upon themselves, and sometimes they give themselves a desire to do penances without a path or plan, which last two days, as if to say. Then the devil fills their imagination with harmful thoughts; he makes them fear penance and afraid to follow what the Rule commands, telling them, "you've already tried that." We don't keep some of the simpler parts of the Rule—like silence, which shouldn't hurt us—and we don't get a headache when we skip choir, which doesn't kill us either, yet we want to invent our own penances so that we end up unable to do either. And sometimes the harm is little, and it seems to us that we are not obliged to do anything, since we fulfill it by asking for permission. You might ask, why does the prioress provide this? To know the inner self, perhaps it wouldn't do; but since you provide necessary information and there's no lack of a doctor who helps with the same that you provide, and a friend who cries at your side, or a relative, what should be done? It remains with scruples if there's a lack in love. She wants you to fail more than she wants to fail herself. These things might happen eventually, and I mention them here so you can guard against them. Because if the devil starts to frighten us with the thought that our health will fail, we won't accomplish anything. May the Lord give us the light to succeed in everything, amen.

Pues no sé yo a qué venimos.
