Chapter 18SweHymn.1.18

Gud ware oss barmhertig och mild

A Prayer for Divine Grace and Global Praise

The hymn opens with a petition for God's mercy and the illumination of His face so that His salvation may be known among all nations.

May God be merciful and gracious to us and grant us his grace; may the light of his face shine upon us with the fire of love, so that we may know his ways and learn his blessed will, and so that among every nation Christ, our salvation and honor, may receive all praise and glory.

The Joy of Righteous Judgment

The focus shifts to the universal call for praise in response to God's righteous judgment and the promise of forgiveness.

May every tongue thank and praise you, O Lord God, and may the whole world rejoice and sing with delight and joy, because you have come to us to render righteous judgment; and whoever falls before you here will surely receive what is best: the forgiveness of all their sins.

A Trinitarian Blessing and Thanksgiving

The hymn concludes with a call for all people to honor God for the earth's fruitfulness, sealed by a Trinitarian blessing.

Yes, may every virtuous and devout people thank God and praise you, for the earth now richly bears its fruit in crops and flowers. May the Father and the Son bless us; may God the Holy Spirit bless us. May almighty God, enthroned in heaven, be feared and honored in every land. From our hearts we say: Amen.
