Tesse äre the tiyo buud

The Law of the Lord

An introduction to the Ten Commandments as a divine gift given through Moses.

These are the Ten Commandments, which the Lord God gave us himself through Moses, his faithful servant, on Mount Sinai. Lord, have mercy.

Duties Toward God

The first three commandments focus on exclusive devotion to God, reverence for His name, and the sanctification of the Sabbath.

I alone am the Lord your God. Keep yourself free from other gods. Direct all your devotion toward me, and love me with all your heart. Lord, have mercy. Don't misuse God's precious name. Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. Don't let empty words leave your mouth; honor God's name from the depths of your heart. Lord, have mercy. Keep God’s Sabbath day faithfully so the weary servant can rest. Set your own work aside so that God himself may work within you.

Duties Toward Neighbor

The remaining commandments outline the horizontal responsibilities of honoring parents, preserving life, purity, property, and truth.

Honor your father and mother; you must respect and help them. Then you'll live a long life, and things will go well for you. Don't kill with your tongue or a knife, and don't seek anyone else's life. Put away hatred and be gentle; be kind, even to your enemy. You must not commit adultery either, because it brings great suffering. Drive all sexual immorality away from you; it carries shame and disgrace with it. Kyrie—1 You must avoid all theft, deceit, fraud, usury, and cheating; support the poor with your possessions and a generous hand. Don't deal in false testimony or lie about your neighbor. Help and support him in what is right, and completely cover his disgrace and shame. Don't desire your neighbor's wife, house, or possessions; instead, wish for him and help him obtain everything you would want for yourself.

A Prayer for Obedience

A concluding reflection on the necessity of the Law and a prayer for the Holy Spirit's help to fulfill it.

God’s commandment is now fully laid out and teaches us what pleases him. This is what he truly wants from us; anyone who doesn’t follow it can see their failing right here. Lord, have mercy. May he, in his mercy, grant that we always keep God's commandments. May his Spirit help us do what he wants. Lord, have mercy.

Notes

  1. 1The abbreviated final word appears to begin a recurring Kyrie refrain that continues beyond the supplied section.
