The Necessity of Intellectual Discipline
The spiritual battle requires a disciplined intellect to avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and curiosity.
If our distrust and confidence in God, which are so necessary in this battle, are left alone, we won't only fail to gain victory over ourselves, but we'll also plunge into many evils. Therefore, in addition to these, we need the exercise mentioned as the third point above. This exercise should primarily be carried out through the intellect and the will. As for the intellect, we must guard it against the two things that usually fight against it.
Illuminating the Mind
The intellect must be cleared of ignorance through prayer and submission to spiritual guidance.
The first is ignorance, which obscures it and prevents the knowledge of the truth, which is its proper object. Therefore, through practice, it must be made clear and bright so that it can see and discern well what is necessary to purify the soul from disordered passions and adorn it with holy virtues. This light can be obtained in two ways. The first and most important is prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to grant it to our hearts. This will always happen if we truly seek God alone; if we strive to do His holy will and submit everything, along with our own judgment, to the decision of our spiritual father.
Seeing Through the World's Deception
True wisdom comes from evaluating the world according to the Spirit rather than outward appearances.
The other way is to constantly practice looking deeply and sincerely at things to see them as they truly are, whether they're good or bad. You should do this according to what the Holy Spirit teaches, rather than how they appear on the surface, how they present themselves to your senses, or how the world judges them. This consideration, made as it should be, clearly shows us that we should regard as nothing, as vanity and falsehood, all those things that the blind and corrupt world loves and desires, and that it seeks through various means; that earthly honors and pleasures are nothing but vanity and affliction of spirit; that the injuries and slanders the world inflicts upon us bring true glory and quiet tribulations; that forgiving enemies and doing good to them is magnanimity and one of the greatest likenesses to God; that the contempt of the world is worth more than being its master; that obeying willingly for the love of God even the most vile creatures is a more magnanimous and generous act than commanding great princes; that humble self-knowledge should be valued more than the height of all sciences; and that conquering and mortifying our own appetites, no matter how small, deserves greater praise than capturing many cities. Se la diffidenza di noi e la confidenza in Dio tanto necessarie in questa battaglia saranno sole, non solamente non avremo vittoria su noi stessi, ma precipiteremo in molti mali. Perciò, oltre a queste, ci è necessario l'esercizio, che è la terza cosa proposta sopra. Questo esercizio si deve fare principalmente con l'intelletto e con la volontà. Quanto all'intelletto deve essere da noi guardato da due cose che sogliono combatterlo.
L'una è l'ignoranza, che lo oscura e gli impedisce la conoscenza del vero, che è il suo oggetto proprio. Perciò con l'esercizio lo si deve rendere lucido e chiaro, perché possa vedere e discernere bene quanto ci è necessario per purificare l'anima dalle passioni disordinate e ornarla delle sante virtù. Questo lume in due modi si può ottenere.
Il primo e più importante è l'orazione, pregando lo Spirito Santo che si degni infonderlo nei nostri cuori. Questo lo farà sempre, se in verità cercheremo Dio solo; se cercheremo di fare la sua santa volontà e se sottoporremo ogni cosa insieme al nostro giudizio alla decisione del padre spirituale.
L'altro modo è un continuo esercizio di profonda e leale considerazione delle cose per vedere come siano, se buone o cattive: e ciò secondo come insegna lo Spirito Santo e non come appaiono all'esterno, si rappresentano ai sensi e giudica il mondo.
Questa considerazione, fatta come si conviene, ci fa chiaramente conoscere che si debbono avere per nulla, per vanità e bugia tutte quelle cose che il cieco e corrotto mondo ama e desidera, e che con vari modi e mezzi si va procurando; che gli onori e i piaceri terreni non sono altro che vanità e afflizione di spirito; che le ingiurie e le infamie, che il mondo ci dà, portano vera gloria e le tribolazioni quiete; che perdonare i nemici e fare loro del bene è magnanimità e una delle maggiori somiglianze con Dio; che vale più il disprezzo del mondo che l'esserne padrone; che l'obbedire volentieri per amore di Dio alle più vili creature è cosa più magnanima e generosa del comandare ai grandi prìncipi; che l'umile conoscenza di noi stessi si deve apprezzare più dell'altezza di tutte le scienze; che il vincere e mortificare i propri appetiti, per piccoli che siano, merita maggior lode che l'espugnare molte città (cfr. Pro 16,32), superare potenti eserciti con le armi in mano, fare miracoli e risuscitare i morti.
