The Necessity of Divine Reliance
We must acknowledge that no human effort or past experience is sufficient to overcome spiritual trials without the constant, active intervention of God.
Since all the strength to overcome our enemies comes primarily from distrusting ourselves and trusting in God, I’m providing you with reminders so you can achieve this with divine help. You need to know and hold as certain that neither all the gifts, whether natural or acquired, nor all the freely given graces, nor the knowledge of all Scripture, nor having served God for a long time and made a habit of it, will enable us to fulfill His will in any good and acceptable work we are to do, in any temptation we are to overcome, in any danger we are to flee, or in any cross we are to bear according to His will, unless, I say, our heart is helped and lifted by the particular aid of God, and unless God Himself extends His hand to help us do all this. Therefore, we must keep this truth in mind throughout our entire lives—every day, every hour, and every moment: that we can never, in any way or by any plan, place our trust in ourselves.
Unfailing Trust in the Victor
Regardless of past failures or the intensity of our struggles, we must persist in the fight with unwavering confidence in God's certain help.
As for trusting in God, know that it’s no harder for Him to defeat a few enemies than it is to defeat many, whether they are old and experienced or weak and inexperienced. Therefore, even if a soul is burdened with sins, has all the flaws of the world, and is as defective as one can imagine; even if it has tried everything, used every means, and engaged in every practice to abandon sin and do good; even if it has never been able to acquire even a little good, but has instead fallen deeper into evil: despite all this, it must not fail to trust in God nor ever abandon its spiritual arms and exercises. It must always fight generously, knowing that in this spiritual battle, those who don't stop fighting and trusting in God don't lose, for His help never fails His soldiers, even if at times He allows them to be wounded. Keep fighting, for that is everything! The remedy for wounds is ready and effective for the soldiers who confidently seek God and His help; and when they least expect it, their enemies will find themselves dead.

Poiché tutta la forza di vincere i nostri nemici nasce principalmente dalla diffidenza di noi stessi e dalla confidenza in Dio, di nuovo ti provvedo di avvisi perché tu le consegua con il divino aiuto.
Devi sapere dunque e tenere per cosa certa che né tutti i doni, o naturali o acquisiti che siano, né tutte le grazie gratis date, né la conoscenza di tutta la Scrittura, né l'aver lungamente servito Dio e fatto in questo l'abitudine ci faranno compiere la sua volontà, se in qualunque opera buona e accetta agli occhi suoi che dobbiamo fare, e in qualunque tentazione che dobbiamo vincere, e in qualunque pericolo che dobbiamo fuggire, e in qualunque croce che dobbiamo portare secondo la sua volontà, se, dico, non è aiutato ed elevato il cuor nostro dal particolare aiuto di Dio, e anzi Dio stesso non ci tenda anche la mano per fare tutto questo. Dunque dobbiamo in tutta la nostra vita, in tutti i giorni, in tutte le ore e in tutti i momenti aver presente questa verità: che così per nessuna via o progetto potremo mai confidare in noi stessi.
Per quanto poi riguarda la confidenza in Dio, sappi che per lui non c'è niente di più facile che vincere i pochi come i molti nemici, i vecchi ed esperti come i fiacchi e inesperti. Perciò, sebbene un'anima sia carica di peccati, abbia tutti i difetti del mondo, anzi sia difettosa quanto mai si possa immaginare; benché abbia tentato quanto si voglia, usato qualunque mezzo e fatto qualunque esercizio per lasciare il peccato e operare il bene; benché non abbia mai potuto acquistare un minimo di bene, anzi sia precipitata più pesantemente nel male: con tutto ciò non deve mancare di confidare in Dio né deve mai lasciare le armi e gli esercizi spirituali, ma combattere sempre generosamente in quanto bisogna sapere che in questa battaglia spirituale non perde chi non smette di combattere e di confidare in Dio, il cui aiuto non manca mai ai suoi soldati anche se a volte permette che siano feriti. Si combatta pure, perché qui è tutto! La medicina per le ferite è pronta ed efficace per i soldati, che con confidenza cercano Dio e il suo aiuto; e quando meno ci pensano, i nemici si troveranno morti.
