Meditating on Divine Love

Reflect on the eternal, measureless, and selfless love of God who gives Himself to us in the Eucharist.

To inspire you through this heavenly Sacrament to love your God, you should turn your thoughts to His love for you, reflecting from the previous evening on this point: how that great and all-powerful Lord, not content with having created you in His image and likeness, not satisfied with sending His only-begotten Son to earth to suffer thirty-three years for your sins, to endure the harshest trials and the painful death on the cross to redeem you, also wanted to leave Him to you as your food and for your benefit in the most holy Sacrament of the altar. Consider carefully, dear child, the incomprehensible greatness of this love: it makes it perfect and unique in every way. First. Because if we look at time, our God has loved us perpetually and without any beginning; and as eternal as He is in His divinity, so eternal is His love with which, before all ages, He decided in His mind to give us His Son in this marvelous way. Therefore, rejoicing in this internal joy, you can say: “So in that abyss of eternity, my smallness was so esteemed and loved by the supreme God that He thought of me and with feelings of ineffable charity longed to give me His very Son as food?” . Second. Moreover, all other loves, no matter how great, have some limit and cannot extend beyond that, but only the love of our Lord is without measure. And wanting to fully satisfy Himself, He gave His own Son, who is equal to Him in infinite majesty and of the same substance and nature. Thus, the love is as great as the gift, and the gift is as great as the love; both are so immense that no intellect can imagine anything greater. Third. God wasn't compelled to love us by any necessity or force; rather, it was solely His intrinsic natural goodness that moved Him to such an incomprehensible love for us. Fourth. He couldn't have been moved by any action or merit of ours to show such excessive love toward our lowliness; rather, it's solely by His own generosity that He has completely given Himself to us, His most unworthy creatures. Fifth. And if you consider the purity of this love, you'll see that it isn't mixed with any self-interest like worldly loves; after all, our Lord doesn't need our possessions, as He is perfectly happy and glorious in Himself without us. Therefore, His ineffable goodness and love have been poured out upon us purely for our benefit, not His own. As you think carefully about this, you might say to yourself: 'How is it possible that a Lord so sublime cares for such a vile creature?' What do you want, King of glory? What do you expect from me, who am nothing but a bit of dust? My God, in the light of your burning love, I clearly see that you have only one purpose: to reveal to me more clearly the purity of your love for me, since you give yourself to me entirely as food, for no other reason than to transform me completely into you. And this isn't because you need me, but because, by living in me and I in you, you become yourself through loving union, and the vileness of my earthly heart becomes one divine heart with you. Therefore, you, filled with joyful wonder, seeing yourself so highly valued and loved by God, and knowing that He, with His omnipotent love, intends nothing else from you but to draw all your love into Himself, first detach yourself from all creatures and then even from yourself, who are a creature, and offer yourself entirely to your Lord as a burnt offering: from this moment on, let only His love and divine goodwill move your intellect, will, and memory, and govern your senses.

Aspirations for the Sacrament

Express your desire for the Eucharist through heartfelt prayers and aspirations.

Since nothing can produce such divine effects in you as seeking Him worthily in the most holy Sacrament of the altar, open your heart to the Lord with these short prayers and loving aspirations: “O heavenly food! When will that hour come when I’ll sacrifice myself entirely to you, not with any other fire but with the fire of your love? When, when, O uncreated Love? O living bread! When will I live only in you, for you, and with you? When, my life, beautiful life, joyful and eternal? O heavenly manna! When, weary of all other earthly food, will I long for you alone and feed only on you? When will it be, my sweetness? When, my only good? My loving and all-powerful Lord, free this miserable heart from every attachment and from every vicious passion; adorn it with your holy virtues and with that pure intention of doing everything solely to please you. In this way, I will come to open my heart to you; I will invite you and I will gently compel you to enter: therefore, you, O Lord, will work in me those effects that you have always desired without resistance. You can practice these loving affections morning and evening as a preparation for Communion.

Approaching the Altar

Prepare to receive the Lord by acknowledging your unworthiness and offering yourself to His will.

As the time for Communion approaches, think about what you are about to receive: the Son of God of incomprehensible majesty, before whom the heavens and all powers tremble. The Holy of Holies, the spotless mirror, and the incomprehensible purity, in comparison to whom no creature is clean. He who is like a worm and the scum of the earth (cf. SI 22:7) for your love chose to be rejected, trampled, mocked, spat upon, and crucified by the malice and iniquity of the world. For your love, He willingly allowed Himself to be rejected, trampled, mocked, spat upon, and crucified by the malice and iniquity of the world. I tell you that you are about to receive God, in whose hands are the life and death of the entire universe. Yet you, in yourself, are nothing, and because of your sin and malice, you have made yourself lower than any vile and unclean irrational creature, deserving to be confused and mocked by all the infernal demons. And I say that instead of being grateful for so many immense and countless benefits, you have followed your own whims and desires, despising such a high and loving Lord and outraging his precious blood. Yet despite all this, in his perpetual charity and unchanging goodness, he calls you to his divine table and sometimes compels you with threats of death to go there. Neither does he close the door of his mercy to you, nor does he turn his divine back on you, even though by nature you are leprous, lame, dropsical, blind, possessed, and have given yourself to many fornicators. This is all the Lord wants from you. First: that you feel sorrow for having offended Him. Second: above all else, you should hate sin, whether it's serious or minor. Third: offer yourself completely and surrender yourself, with constant affection and through your actions in every situation, to His will and obedience to Him. Fourth: that you hope and have firm faith that He will forgive you, cleanse you, and protect you from all your enemies. Strengthened by this ineffable love of the Lord, you'll then approach to receive Communion with a holy and loving fear, saying: “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you for all the times I've gravely offended you, nor have I yet wept as I should for my offense against you.” Lord, I am not worthy to receive you because I'm not at all cleansed from the affections that lead to venial sins. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you because I haven't yet sincerely given myself to your love, your will, and obedience to you. My Lord, omnipotent and infinitely good, by the virtue of your goodness and your word, make me worthy to receive you with this faith, my love.”

Communion with the Beloved

Engage in a sacred dialogue with the Lord after receiving Him in your heart.

After you have received Communion, immediately withdraw into the secret of your heart and, forgetting everything created, speak with your Lord in this way or something similar: “O most high King of heaven! Who has brought you into me, who am miserable, poor, blind, and naked?” . And He will answer you: “Love.” And you, responding, will say: “O Uncreated Love! O Sweet Love! What do you want from me?” . He will say to you, "Nothing but love." I want no other fire to burn on the altar of your heart, in your sacrifices, and in all your works than the fire of my love, which, consuming every other love and every desire of yours, may give me the sweetest fragrance. This is what I have asked and continue to ask, because I long to be entirely yours and for you to be entirely mine. This will never happen as long as you remain attached to self-love, your own opinions, and your own desires and reputation, instead of making that surrender of yourself which delights me so much. I ask you to hate yourself so that I may give you my love; I ask for your heart so that it may unite with mine, which was opened for this purpose on the cross. And I ask for all of you, so that I may be entirely yours. You see that I am of incomparable worth, and yet, because of my goodness, I am worth as much as you are. So buy me now, my beloved soul, by giving yourself to me. I want from you, my sweet daughter, that you desire nothing, think of nothing, understand nothing, and see nothing outside of me and my will, so that I may want, think, understand, and see everything in you, in such a way that your nothing, absorbed in the abyss of my infinity, may be transformed into that. In this way, you will be completely happy and blessed in me, and I will be entirely content in you.

The Final Offering

Conclude your devotion by offering the Son to the Father for the needs of the Church and the world.

Finally, you will offer to the Father His Son, first as a thanksgiving and then for your needs, for the whole holy Church, for all your loved ones, for those to whom you are obligated, and for the souls in purgatory. Make this offering in remembrance of, and in union with, the offering He made of Himself when, hanging from the cross, all bloodied, He offered Himself to the Father. And in this way, you will also be able to offer Him all the sacrifices that are made on that day in the holy Roman Church.

. Ed egli ti risponderà: “L'amore”. E tu replicando dirai: “O Amore increato! O Amore dolce! Che cosa vuoi tu da me?” .

Comprami dunque ormai, anima mia diletta, col dare te a me.

Così tu sarai in me pienamente felice e beata, e io in te tutto contento”.
