Meditating on the Physical Passion

The author invites the reader to contemplate the specific physical tortures of Christ's crucifixion to stir the heart.

What I mentioned earlier about the Lord's passion serves as a way to pray and meditate through questions. Now I'll add how we can draw various affections from that same meditation. For example, if you decide to meditate on the crucifixion, you can consider the following points, among others, within that mystery. First. When the Lord was violently stripped by that furious mob on Mount Calvary, they tore his flesh along with the clothes that had stuck to him from his earlier beatings. Second. How the crown of thorns was taken from his head, which, when it was put back on him, caused him new wounds. Third. Consider how He was cruelly nailed to the cross by the blows of hammers and nails. Fourth. As his sacred limbs, not reaching the openings made to drive in the nails, were pulled with such violence by those dogs that all his dislocated bones could be counted one by one. Fifth. As the Lord hung on the hard wood and had no support other than the nails, the weight of His body pulling down caused His most sacred wounds to stretch and become more painful with indescribable agony.

Drawing Affections from the Cross

The reader is guided to derive specific spiritual fruits—love, contrition, hope, and wonder—from the contemplation of Christ's suffering.

From these or other points, if you want to stir up feelings of love within you, practice meditating on them to move from knowledge to a deeper understanding of the infinite goodness and love of your Lord toward you: He willingly suffered greatly for you, so that as your knowledge increases, your love will grow as well. From this knowledge of the goodness and infinite love the Lord has shown you, you will easily draw forth contrition and sorrow for having offended your God so many times with such ingratitude—the same God who has been mistreated and torn apart in so many ways because of your sins. To inspire you with hope, consider that in this state of such great calamity, a Lord so great has fallen to extinguish sin and free you from the snares of the devil and your particular faults; to make His eternal Father favorable to you and to give you confidence to turn to Him in every need. You'll feel joy as you move from His sufferings to their effects, considering that through those sufferings Jesus purifies the sins of the whole world, calms the Father's wrath, confounds the prince of darkness, kills death, and fills the angelic thrones. Moreover, move toward joy for the delight that the most holy Trinity receives with the Virgin Mary and the triumphant and militant Church. To inspire you to hate your sins, apply every point you meditate on to this one purpose, as if the Lord had suffered for no other reason than to lead you to hate your bad inclinations—especially the one that dominates you most and displeases His divine goodness. To inspire wonder in you, consider what could be greater than this: to see the Creator of the universe, who gives life to all things, being persecuted to death by His creatures; to see the supreme Majesty trampled and humiliated, justice condemned, and the beauty of God spat upon. To see the love of the heavenly Father hated; to see that uncreated and inaccessible light reduced to the power of darkness; to see the same glory and happiness of humanity treated as dishonor and reproach, and sunk into the utmost misery.

The Inward Sorrows of the Redeemer

The meditation deepens to consider the internal, incomparable anguish of Christ's soul, including his empathy for all human suffering.

To empathize with your suffering Lord, in addition to meditating on His external pains, delve into those greater, incomparable sorrows that tormented Him internally. If you grieve for those, it would be strange if your heart didn't break for these. The soul of Christ saw the divine essence as it now sees it in heaven; it recognized it as worthy beyond measure of all honor and service, and for this, out of His ineffable love for God, He desired that all creatures dedicate themselves with all their strength. Therefore, seeing it, by contrast, so absurdly offended and despised by the infinite sins and abominable wickedness of the world, the soul of Christ was simultaneously pierced by infinite stings of pain. These tormented Him all the more, as His love and desire for such high Majesty to be honored and served by all were that much greater. And just as the greatness of this love and desire cannot be understood, so no one can grasp how bitter and grave the internal affliction of the crucified Lord was. Moreover, loving all creatures in an indescribable way, he grieved beyond all telling for all their sins, because of which they were about to separate from him; in fact, for every mortal sin that all men who were and will be committed, as many times as each one sinned, Christ was separated from the Father with whom he was united by love. This separation was far more painful than the severing of bodily limbs from their natural place, to the extent that the soul, being pure spirit and more noble and perfect than the body, was capable of suffering. Among these sufferings caused by creatures, the most bitter was that endured by the Lord for all the sins of the damned, who, unable to ever reunite with Him, were about to suffer eternal, incomparable torments. And if the soul, softened for her dear Jesus, reflects further, she will find much to empathize with in Him, suffering even too great pains not only for the sins committed but also for those that were never committed: indeed, there is no doubt that our Lord, at the cost of His precious sufferings, earned for us the forgiveness of those and preservation from these. Daughter, you won't lack other thoughts to grieve over the sufferings of your Crucified Lord. This is because there has never been, nor will there ever be, any pain in any reasonable creature that He hasn't felt within Himself. The injuries and temptations, the infamies, the penances, every anguish and toil of all the men of the world tormented the soul of Christ more intensely than they tormented those who suffered them. Indeed, our most compassionate Lord perfectly saw and, in His immense love, desired to share and imprint in His heart all their great and small afflictions of soul and body, even the slightest headache or pinprick. However, no one can explain how much the pains of his most holy mother affected him: in every way and for every reason that the Lord grieved and suffered, the holy Virgin grieved and suffered just as intensely, although not quite so much. And those same sorrows of hers renewed the internal wounds of her blessed Son to such an extent that his sweetest heart was pierced as if by many fiery arrows of love. Because of the many torments I have mentioned, and countless others unknown to us, this heart could well be called a loving hell of voluntary pains, as one devout soul wrote, who in holy simplicity used to describe it that way. 282, ndr).

The Call to Conversion and Virtue

The chapter concludes by identifying sin as the cause of Christ's suffering, urging the reader to respond with hatred for sin and the pursuit of virtue.

Daughter, if you consider well the reason for all the pains endured by our crucified Redeemer and Lord, you will find nothing but sin. The clear consequence is this: the true primary compassion and the gratitude he seeks from us, which we owe him in an indescribable way, consist in purely grieving for his sake over the offense done to him, in hating above all hatred the sin, and in fighting generously against all his enemies and our bad inclinations. And we, stripping off the old man and his works, put on the new man, (cf. Ephesians 4:20-24) adorning our soul with the evangelical virtues.

Terzo. Come a colpi di martelli e di chiodi fu crudelmente confitto in croce.

Quarto.
