The Danger of Desiring Relief
The author warns against the desire to escape suffering, explaining how such impatience diminishes the spiritual value of our trials.
When you find yourself in any situation that is even a little painful and you endure it with a patient spirit, be careful never to let yourself be persuaded by the devil or your own self-love to want to be freed from it, because two main harms would come to you from that. The first is that if this desire doesn't take away your patience in the moment, at least gradually it will lead you toward impatience. The other point is that your patience would become flawed and would only be rewarded by God for the time you suffered. If, however, you hadn't desired liberation but had completely surrendered yourself to His divine goodness, the Lord would have recognized even an hour or less of suffering as a service of the longest duration.
Aligning Desires with God's Will
A universal rule is proposed: align all desires purely with the will of God to find peace in every circumstance, even in deep suffering.
Therefore, in this and in everything, make it your universal rule to keep your desires so far from any other object that you aim purely and simply at their true and only purpose: the will of God. In this way, they will be just and upright, and you will remain not only calm but content in any adversity you face: since nothing can happen without the supreme will, by wanting that, you will prepare yourself to will together and to receive everything you desire and that occurs in every circumstance. This, which doesn't refer to your sins or those of others since God does not will them, occurs in every suffering caused by those very sins or for some other reason, even if it were so violent that it penetrated deeply enough to touch the bottom of the heart, almost drying up the roots of natural life: even this is a cross with which God sometimes delights to favor his most intimate and dear friends. What I say about the suffering you encounter in every situation should also apply to the parts of a struggle that remain, which the Lord wants us to endure even after we have used every lawful means to be freed from them. These means should also be used according to God's will and plan, as He has ordained them for us to use because He desires it—not out of self-attachment, and not because we love and desire liberation from bothersome things more than what His service and good pleasure require.

Quando ti ritrovi in qualunque cosa sia pure penosa e la sostieni con animo paziente, sta' attenta a non lasciarti mai persuadere dal demonio o dal tuo amor proprio a desiderarne la liberazione, perché da ciò ti verrebbero due danni principali.
L'uno è che, qualora questo desiderio non ti togliesse sul momento la virtù della pazienza, almeno a poco a poco ti andrebbe disponendo all'impazienza.
L'altro è che la tua pazienza si renderebbe difettosa e sarebbe ricompensata da Dio solamente per quello spazio di tempo in cui tu patissi. Invece se tu non avessi desiderato la liberazione, ma ti fossi del tutto rimessa alla sua divina bontà, benché in effetti il tuo patire fosse stato di un'ora sola e anche meno, il Signore lo avrebbe riconosciuto per un servizio di lunghissimo tempo.
Perciò in questa e in tutte le cose abbi per regola universale di tenere i tuoi desideri così lontani da ogni altro oggetto, da mirare puramente e semplicemente al loro vero e unico scopo, che è il volere di Dio. In tal modo essi saranno giusti e retti e tu in qualunque contrarietà starai non solo quieta ma contenta: non potendo accadere nessuna cosa senza la suprema volontà, volendo tu quella, ti disporrai a volere insieme e a ricevere tutto ciò che desideri e che succede in ogni circostanza.
Questo, che non si intende dei peccati tuoi o altrui poiché Dio non li vuole, avviene in ogni pena causata dai peccati stessi o da qualche altro motivo, anche se essa fosse tanto violenta e penetrasse così addentro che, toccando il fondo del cuore, quasi seccasse le radici della vita naturale: anche questa è croce con cui Dio si compiace favorire talora i suoi amici più intimi e cari.
E ciò che dico della sofferenza che incontri in ogni caso, intendilo riferito anche a quella parte di ciascun travaglio che rimane, e che il Signore desidera che noi sosteniamo, dopo aver usato tutti i mezzi leciti per liberarcene. Anche questi si devono regolare in base alla disposizione e alla volontà di Dio, il quale li ha ordinati allo scopo che ce ne serviamo, perché egli così vuole, e non con attaccamento a noi stessi, né perché amiamo e desideriamo la liberazione dalle cose moleste più di quanto, appunto, il suo servizio e il suo beneplacito richiedono.
