Discerning Spiritual Progress
The author explains that while the duration of spiritual exercises varies by individual, true progress is marked by steadfastness in dryness and the weakening of sensual rebellion.
As for the time in which one should continue practicing each virtue, it's not for me to determine, since this should be regulated based on the state and needs of each individual, the progress being made on the path of the spirit, and the judgment of those who guide us along that path. But if you truly apply yourself using the methods and diligence we've discussed, you'll undoubtedly make significant progress in just a few weeks. It's a sign that you've made progress in virtue when, in dryness, amidst darkness and the struggles of the soul, and in the absence of spiritual tastes, you continue steadfastly in virtuous exercises. You can also gauge your progress by the contrast between your sensuality and your acts of virtue: the more your sensuality loses its strength, the more you can consider that you've advanced in virtue. Therefore, if you don't experience contradiction or rebellion in your lower, sensual nature—especially during sudden and unexpected assaults—it's a sign that you've already attained that virtue. And the more our actions are accompanied by greater readiness and joy of spirit, the more we can think we've progressed in this exercise.
The Danger of Presumption
We must guard against the pride of believing we have mastered our passions, maintaining instead a humble perspective on our own spiritual state.
However, we should never convince ourselves, as if it were a certainty, that we possess the virtues and are completely victorious over any of our passions, even if after a long time and many battles we haven't felt their urges; for here the cunning action of the devil and our deceptive nature can still insinuate themselves. Therefore, sometimes what appears to be a virtue may actually be a vice due to hidden pride. Moreover, if we aspire to the perfection to which God calls us, even after making significant progress on the path of virtue, we must persuade ourselves that we haven't even entered its initial boundaries.
Perseverance in Humility
The soul is encouraged to focus on the work of virtue rather than self-analysis, trusting God to reveal progress in His own time.
So, like a young warrior and a newborn child meant for battle, you should always approach your exercises as if you hadn't done anything yet. I remind you, daughter, to focus more on growing in virtues than on meticulously examining your own progress. The Lord God, the true and only searcher of our hearts, reveals this to some and not to others, depending on whether He sees that such knowledge will lead to humility or pride. As a loving Father, He removes danger from some and offers others the opportunity to grow in virtues. Therefore, even if the soul isn't aware of its progress, it should continue in its exercises; it will see that progress when it pleases the Lord, for its greater good.
