Chapter 38SpirCombat.1.38

Embracing the Crucible of Virtue

The author argues that true spiritual growth requires engaging with, rather than fleeing from, the people and situations that challenge our patience and peace.

We've seen quite clearly that on the journey toward perfection, we must always keep moving forward without stopping. To do this, we need to be attentive and vigilant not to let any opportunity that presents itself to acquire virtues slip away. Therefore, those who distance themselves as much as they can from contrary things that could serve this purpose do not think wisely. To use a common example, I ask you: do you want to develop the habit of patience? It isn't good for you to distance yourself from the people, actions, and thoughts that stir your impatience. Therefore, you shouldn't avoid dealing with someone just because they annoy you; instead, while conversing and interacting with anyone who causes you discomfort, always keep your will ready and willing to tolerate anything that might happen to be unpleasant or bothersome; if you did otherwise, you would never get used to patience. Similarly, if an action bothers you either in itself or because of who imposed it on you, or because it distracts you from doing something else you prefer, don’t hesitate to undertake it and continue with it, even if you feel uneasy about it and could find peace by leaving it behind. In this way, you’d never learn to endure, and your peace wouldn’t be genuine, since it wouldn’t come from a heart purified from passion and adorned with virtue. The same goes for annoying thoughts that sometimes trouble and disturb your mind: you shouldn’t completely drive them away, because the pain they cause you also serves to help you get accustomed to tolerating adversity. Anyone who tells you otherwise is teaching you to flee from the struggle you feel, rather than to achieve the virtue you desire.

Prudence in the Spiritual Battle

While caution is necessary for the novice, one must not avoid all adversity, with the specific exception of temptations of the flesh.

It's true that, especially for a young soldier, it's important to navigate and manage situations with caution and skill, sometimes facing them and sometimes avoiding them, depending on how much virtue and strength of spirit one is gaining. But one should never completely turn one's back and withdraw from every opportunity for adversity, because if we were to save ourselves from the danger of falling at that moment, in the future we would be exposed to greater risks from the blows of impatience, having not armed and fortified ourselves beforehand with the use of the opposing virtue. However, these warnings don't apply to the vice of the flesh, which we've already discussed in detail.
