The Danger of Standing Still
The spiritual life requires constant forward movement, as stopping leads to regression and the loss of grace.
Beyond what has already been taught, one of the most important and necessary things for acquiring virtues is this: to reach our goal, we must keep moving forward, because simply stopping will cause us to fall back. When we stop practicing virtue, the violent pull of our sensitive appetites and external influences inevitably cause many disordered passions to arise within us. These passions either destroy or at least diminish our virtues, and we are also deprived of many graces and gifts we could have received from the Lord had we continued to make progress. Therefore, the spiritual journey is different from a physical one: in a physical journey, stopping doesn't mean you lose the ground you've already covered, but in the spiritual life, it does. Furthermore, while physical fatigue increases with continued walking, on the spiritual path, the further you go, the more strength and vigor you gain.
The Joy of Steady Progress
As the soul advances in virtue, the struggle against the lower appetites eases, leading to divine joy and ultimate rest in God.
This happens because, through virtuous practice, the lower part, which previously made the path rough and difficult with its resistance, weakens more and more; whereas the upper part, where virtue resides, becomes more established and strengthened. Therefore, as you progress in goodness, any pain you feel diminishes, and a certain secret joy, which divine action mixes with that very pain, increases with each passing hour. In this way, by continuing to move forward with increasing ease and delight from virtue to virtue, you finally reach the summit of the mountain where the soul, now perfected, works without discomfort; rather, it works with joy and gladness because, having already conquered and tamed disordered passions and rising above all creation and itself, it lives happily in the heart of the Most High and there finds sweet rest while laboring.
