The Disposition of the Soul
A resolute spirit and a deep affection for virtue are the foundational requirements for spiritual growth.
To acquire virtues, in addition to what we've already mentioned, a generous and great spirit is required, along with a will that is neither weak nor relaxed, but resolute and strong, along with the firm understanding that one must endure many contrary and harsh things. Moreover, you must have a particular inclination and affection toward the virtues. You can achieve this by frequently considering how pleasing they are to God, how noble and excellent they are in themselves, and how useful and necessary they are to us, since every perfection begins with them and ends in them.
Practical Exercises for Virtue
Daily resolutions, self-examination, and the imitation of Christ help us cultivate specific virtues until they become habitual.
Every morning, let effective resolutions be made to practice the virtues according to the things that will likely happen that day, during which we should examine ourselves multiple times to see if we have carried them out or not, renewing them more fervently afterward. And all of this particularly concerning the virtue we want to practice at that time. In the same way, let the examples of the saints, our prayers, and the meditations on the life and passion of Christ, which are so necessary in every spiritual exercise, serve primarily for that same virtue in which we will then practice. You should do the same in every situation, even when they differ from one another, as we'll explain in more detail later. We should strive to become so accustomed to virtuous actions, both internal and external, that we perform them with the same readiness and ease with which we previously did other things that aligned with our natural desires. And the more contrary they are to these, as we mentioned elsewhere, the sooner they will instill virtuous habits in our souls.
The Power of Scripture and Prayer
Using scriptural affirmations and ejaculatory prayers acts as a spiritual weapon to sustain the soul in its pursuit of holiness.
The sacred words of Scripture, whether spoken aloud or simply held in the mind, have a wonderful power to help us in this practice. So, keep several sayings ready that relate to the virtue you're working on, and repeat them throughout the day, especially when a contrary passion arises. For example: if we are focusing on acquiring patience, we can say the following sayings or similar ones: “Children, bear with patience the anger that has come upon you from God” (Bar 4:25); “The hope of the afflicted will not be disappointed” (Ps 9:19); “The patient is worth more than a hero; he who rules himself is worth more than he who conquers a city” (Prov 16:32); “By your perseverance you will save your souls” (Luke 21:19); “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us” (Heb 12:1).✦✦✦✦ For the same purpose, we can say these or similar short prayers: “When, my God, will my heart be armed with the shield of patience? When will I bear every trial with a calm spirit to bring joy to my Lord? O dear pains, that make me like my Lord Jesus, who was tortured for me! Will there ever be, unique life of my soul, that for your glory I live content amidst a thousand sorrows? Blessed am I if, amidst the fire of tribulations, I burn with the desire to endure even greater things! . We'll use these and other short prayers that align with our progress in the virtues, and that the spirit of devotion will teach us. These short prayers are called 'ejaculatory prayers' because they are like javelins and arrows shot toward heaven, and they have great power to stir us to virtue and penetrate to the heart of God if they are accompanied by two things, like two wings. The first wing is a true knowledge of the joy God feels when we practice virtue. The second is a true and fervent desire to acquire those virtues solely to please His divine Majesty.
