Le virtù si devono acquistare a poco a poco, esercitandosi per gradi e attendendo prima all'una e poi all'altra

The Wisdom of Gradual Growth

The soldier of Christ is encouraged to pursue virtue with moderation and focus, prioritizing one virtue at a time to ensure lasting progress.

Although a true soldier of Christ who aspires to the height of perfection should never set a limit on his progress, certain spiritual fervors must be restrained with a measure of discretion. When embraced too fervently at the beginning, they later fade and leave us halfway. Therefore, beyond what has been said about moderation in external exercises, understand that internal virtues must also be acquired gradually and in stages, so that what starts small can quickly become substantial and lasting. For example, in adversity, we shouldn't ordinarily try to rejoice in it or desire it unless we have first passed through the lower levels of the virtue of patience. I don't advise you to focus primarily on all or many virtues at once, but on one alone and then on the others; in this way, a virtuous habit can be planted more easily and firmly in the soul. Indeed, with the continuous exercise of a single virtue, the memory more readily recalls it in every situation; the intellect becomes sharper in finding new ways and reasons to acquire it; the will inclines towards it more easily and with greater affection: a thing that these faculties would accomplish very little if they were occupied with acquiring many virtues.

The Interconnectedness of Virtues

Practicing one virtue prepares the soul for others, as all virtues are linked by their divine origin and mutually support one another's growth.

Actions related to a single virtue become less burdensome through this uniform practice, since one virtue calls to and supports another similar one. Because of this similarity, they become more deeply ingrained in us, finding the heart already prepared and willing to receive new ones, just as it previously made room for others like them. These reasons carry much greater weight, as we know for certain that anyone who practices a virtue well also learns how to practice another; and thus, with the growth of one, all grow together through the inseparable bond they share, being rays that proceed from the same divine light.

Abbracciati massimamente all'inizio con troppo ardore, essi poi vengono meno e ci lasciano a mezza strada.
