The Trap of Procrastination
The devil keeps souls bound by the deceptive promise of 'tomorrow,' preventing the immediate action required for spiritual salvation.
Those who already know the corrupt life they lead and want to change it are usually deceived and defeated by the devil with the following weapons: later, later; tomorrow, tomorrow, as the crow says. I want to resolve this matter first and free myself from these trivialities, and then dedicate myself more calmly to the spiritual life. This trap has ensnared many and continues to do so. The reason for this is our negligence and our ineptitude, because in a matter concerning the salvation of the soul and the honor of God, we do not take up that powerful weapon with readiness: now, now! And why is that? Today, today! And why cras, saying to himself: 'But when would I be granted the later and the tomorrow, would this be a way of salvation and victory, to want first to receive wounds and provoke new disorders?' .
The Failure of Mere Resolutions
Spiritual resolutions often fail because they lack humility, rely on self-confidence rather than God, and prioritize comfort over the necessary difficulties of virtue.
So, you see, my daughter, that to escape both this deception and the one from the previous chapter, and to overcome the enemy, the remedy lies in prompt obedience to divine thoughts and inspirations. I'm talking about readiness, not resolutions, because those often fail, and many have been deceived by them for various reasons. The first reason, as mentioned above, is that our intentions lack a foundation in self-distrust and trust in God. Nor does this allow us to see our great pride, from which this deception and blindness arise. The light to recognize these faults and the help to fix them come from God's goodness; He allows us to fall, and through that fall, He calls us to shift from confidence in ourselves to sole confidence in Him, and from pride to self-knowledge. Therefore, if you want your intentions to be effective, they must be strong; and they will be strong only when they rely on no confidence in ourselves and are instead humbly founded entirely on confidence in God. The other reason is that when we prepare to make resolutions, we focus on the beauty and value of virtue, which draws our will toward it even though our will is weak and feeble; therefore, when faced with the difficulties that are essential for acquiring virtue, it falters and pulls back, being weak and inexperienced. However, you should get used to falling in love much more with the difficulties that come with acquiring virtues than with the virtues themselves; and you should always nourish your will with these difficulties—sometimes with a little, sometimes with a lot of sustenance—if you truly want to possess the virtues. And know that the sooner and more deeply you conquer yourself and your enemies, the more generously you'll embrace the difficulties, and the more dear they will be to you. The third reason is that our intentions sometimes aim neither at virtue nor at God's will, but rather at our own interests. This happens in the intentions that are usually made during times of spiritual delights and the tribulations that weigh heavily upon us, for which we find no other relief than to propose to give ourselves entirely to God and to virtuous practices.
Practical Wisdom for Steady Progress
To remain steadfast, one must focus on patient endurance and seeking God's will rather than personal relief or spiritual consolation.
To avoid falling into this, be very cautious and humble in your intentions during times of spiritual delight, especially regarding promises and vows. When you find yourself troubled, focus your intentions on patiently bearing the cross as God wills, and on exalting it by refusing all earthly comfort—and sometimes even heavenly comfort. Let this be your only question and your only desire: that God may help you endure every adversity without tarnishing your patience and without displeasing your Lord.
