You should know, my daughter, that the devil is only concerned with our ruin and that he doesn't fight everyone in the same way. To begin describing some of his battles, methods, and deceptions, I'll present to you various states of man. Some find themselves trapped in the slavery of sin without even considering how to break free. Others want to free themselves, but they don't start the effort. Some think they're on the path of virtue, but in reality, they're wandering away from it. Finally, there are those who, after gaining virtues, end up falling into even greater ruin. And we will discuss all of these distinctly.

Per cominciare a descriverti alcuni dei suoi combattimenti, dei suoi metodi e dei suoi inganni, ti pongo innanzi diversi stati dell'uomo.
Alcuni si trovano nella schiavitù del peccato senza darsi nessun pensiero di liberarsene. Altri vogliono liberarsene, ma non cominciano l'impresa. Altri credono di camminare per la via della virtù, e invece se ne allontanano. Altri finalmente, dopo l'acquisto delle virtù, cadono con maggior rovina. E di tutti discorreremo distintamente.
