Quello che dobbiamo fare quando siamo feriti

Rising After a Fall

When you fall, immediately turn to God with humility and confidence rather than dwelling on your own failure or the devil's accusations.

When you find yourself wounded because you've fallen into some fault due to your weakness, or sometimes even out of willfulness and malice, don't become discouraged or troubled by this. Instead, turn immediately to God and say: “Here I am, my Lord, acting just as I am: nothing else could be expected from me but falls.” And here, take a moment to humble yourself before Him, grieving over the offense you’ve caused to the Lord, and without becoming confused, stir up your indignation against your sinful passions, especially against the one that caused your fall. Then continue: “Nor would I have stopped here, Lord, if You, in Your goodness, hadn’t held me back.” Finally, give Him thanks and love Him more than ever, marveling at such mercy, for though you have offended Him, He extends His right hand to you so that you do not fall again. Finally, say with great confidence in His infinite mercy: “Lord, act as You are; forgive me, and don’t let me ever live separated or distant from You, or offend You again.” Having done this, don’t let yourself think about whether God has forgiven you or not: that is nothing but pride, a troubled mind, a waste of time, and a deception of the devil under the guise of various good excuses. Therefore, freely place yourself in the merciful hands of God and continue your practice as if you hadn't fallen. And if you were to fall many times a day and remain wounded, do this that I have told you with no less confidence the second, the third, and even the last time more than the first; and always despising yourself more and hating sin more, strive to live more prudently. This practice greatly displeases the devil, both because he sees that it is highly pleasing to God and because he becomes confused, finding himself surpassed by someone he had previously defeated. And so, he employs various deceitful methods because we neglect him, and many times he succeeds due to our carelessness and lack of vigilance over ourselves. For this reason, if you find this difficult, you should force yourself all the more to take up this practice repeatedly, even after a single fall.

Restoring Peace of Soul

If you feel discouraged by your sin, first regain your inner peace by meditating on God's goodness before addressing the fall through repentance and confession.

If after your fault you feel anxious, confused, and discouraged, the first thing you need to do is regain peace, calmness of heart, and confidence at the same time; and armed with these, turn to the Lord, because the anxiety you feel over sin is not about offending God, but about your own harm. The way to regain this peace is to completely forget about your fall for the moment and focus on the ineffable goodness of God; how He is, beyond all words, ready and eager to forgive any sin, no matter how serious, calling the sinner in various ways and through many paths, so that they may turn to Him and unite with Him, to be sanctified in this life by His grace and made eternally blessed in the next with glory. Since with these or similar reflections you will have calmed your mind, you will turn to your fall, doing as I mentioned above. Then, during the time of sacramental confession, which I urge you to do frequently, recall all your falls; and with new sorrow, with regret for the offense against God, and with the intention of not offending Him again, sincerely confess them to your spiritual father.
