The Incarnate Word in All Things
The author introduces the practice of contemplating the Incarnate Word through the lens of creation and the divine goodness revealed in His humility.
Earlier, I showed you how we can lift our minds to contemplate the divine through the things we perceive. Now learn how to draw inspiration from them to meditate on the Incarnate Word, by considering the most sacred mysteries of His life and passion. All things in the universe can serve this purpose if you consider in them, as I mentioned above, the supreme God as the sole first cause who has given them all that being, beauty, and superiority they possess; and from this, you can then reflect on how great and immense His goodness is: even though He is the unique principle and Lord of all creation, He chose to descend to such a lowly state as to become man, to suffer and die for humanity, allowing the very men who were to crucify Him to arm themselves against Him.
Instruments of the Passion
Physical objects and natural phenomena are used as reminders of the specific instruments and events of Christ's suffering.
Many things help bring these holy mysteries to mind, such as the weapons, ropes, whips, pillars, thorns, staffs, nails, hammers, and other instruments of His passion. The poor dwellings will remind us of the stable and the manger of the Lord. When it rains, we will think of that bloody divine rain that fell in the garden, dripping from His most sacred body, watering the earth; the stones we will see will remind us of those that broke at the moment of His death; the earth will represent that movement He made then, and the sun will represent the darkness that overshadowed it. And seeing the waters, we will remember that which flowed from His most sacred side. Gospel of John 19:34. I say this in the same way as other similar things.
Sensory Reminders of the Cross
Daily sensory experiences, from taste and sound to personal suffering, are transformed into opportunities to recall the agony and sacrifice of Jesus.
When you taste wine or any other drink, remember the vinegar and gall of your Lord. John 19:29. If the sweetness of scents entices you, recall the stench of the dead bodies He experienced on Calvary. When you dress, remember that the eternal Word clothed Himself in human flesh to clothe you with His divinity. When you undress, think of your Christ stripped bare to be scourged and nailed to the cross for you. When you hear the noise and cries of the crowd, remember those abominable voices: 'Crucify Him! Crucify Him! Take Him away! Take Him away!' John 19:6, which echoed in His divine ears. Every time the clock strikes, let it remind you of that anxious heartbeat that your Jesus was pleased to hear when He began to fear for His impending passion and death in the garden; or let it bring to mind the harsh blows with which He was nailed to the cross. Whenever you face sadness or pain—whether your own or someone else's—remember that it's nothing compared to the indescribable anguish that pierced and afflicted the body and soul of your Lord.

Sopra ti ho mostrato come dalle cose sensibili noi possiamo elevare la mente alla contemplazione della divinità. Ora apprendi un modo di trarre spunto dalle stesse per meditare sul Verbo incarnato, considerando i sacratissimi misteri della sua vita e della sua passione.
Tutte le cose dell'universo possono servire a questo scopo, se consideri in esse, come sopra dicevo, il sommo Dio come sola prima causa che ha dato loro tutto quell'essere, quella bellezza e quella superiorità che hanno; e da questo passa poi a considerare quanto grande e immensa sia la sua bontà: pur essendo unico principio e Signore di tutto il creato, ha voluto discendere a tanta bassezza da farsi uomo, patire e morire per l'uomo, permettendo che gli stessi uomini si armassero contro di lui per crocifiggerlo.
Molte cose poi particolarmente ci portano davanti agli occhi della mente questi santi misteri, come armi, funi, flagelli, colonne, spine, canne, chiodi, martelli e altre che furono strumenti della sua passione.
Le abitazioni povere ci ricorderanno la stalla e il presepio del Signore. Quando piove ci verrà in mente quella sanguinosa divina pioggia che nell'orto, stillando dal suo sacratissimo corpo, irrigò la terra; le pietre che mireremo ci rappresenteranno quelle che si spezzarono nel momento della sua morte; la terra ci raffigurerà quel movimento che fece allora e il sole quelle tenebre che l'oscurarono (cfr. Mt 27,51; Mc 15,38; Lc 23,44); e vedendo le acque, ci ricorderemo di quella che uscì dal suo sacratissimo costato (cfr. Gv 19,34). Il che dico allo stesso modo di altre cose simili.
Gustando il vino o altra bevanda, ricordati dell'aceto e del fiele del tuo Signore (cfr. Gv 19,29). Se la soavità degli odori ti alletta, ricorri con la mente al fetore dei corpi morti da lui sentito sul monte Calvario; quando ti vesti, ricordati che il Verbo eterno si vestì di carne umana per vestire te della sua divinità; quando ti spogli, pensa al tuo Cristo denudato per essere flagellato e confitto in croce per te; udendo rumori e grida di gente, ricordati di quelle abominevoli voci: “Crucifige, crucifige; tolle, tolle” (cfr. Gv 19,6), che rimbombarono nelle sue divine orecchie. Ogni volta che batte l'orologio, ti sovvenga di quell'affannoso battito di cuore che al tuo Gesù piacque sentire, quando nell'orto cominciò a temere della sua vicina passione e morte; ovvero ti paia di sentire quelle dure percosse con le quali fu inchiodato sulla croce.
In qualunque occasione in cui ti si presentino mestizia e dolori tuoi o altrui, pensa che sono come niente rispetto alle indicibili angosce che trafissero e afflissero il corpo e l'anima del tuo Signore.
