Prologus

The Pilgrim's Journey

This section outlines the geographical and spiritual progression of Birgitta's revelations across Rome, Naples, and the Holy Land.

This book of heavenly revelations is the final one; Lady Birgitta received the revelations contained in it while in Rome, and when she first went on pilgrimage to Naples and to the Sanctuary of Saint Michael on Monte Gargano. After her return, however, while she was in Rome, she received some of the revelations that are contained here; and it was there that Christ told her in a vision that she should go on a pilgrimage across the sea to the holy city of Jerusalem. During that overseas journey, she received many revelations in Naples, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem, just as had been promised to her divinely beforehand, as is recorded above in the Book of Questions in the final revelation given to her in the kingdom of Sweden. After she returned to Rome from Jerusalem, she had other revelations as well, which are included here.

The Final Promise

The prologue concludes with the account of Birgitta's death in Rome, preceded by a divine revelation of her final hour.

Then the lady mentioned above died in the city. Before she died, Christ revealed the time and day of her death to her in a vision, as everything is explained more fully below.1

  1. 1The Latin 'lacius' is a common medieval spelling variant for 'latius' (more broadly/fully).
