Chapter 1Revel.7.1

Reuelacio, quam habuit domina Birgitta in Roma post annum iubilei, in qua virgo Maria prenunciat ei, quod itura esset in Iherusalem et Bethleem, quando placuerit Deo, promittens ei tunc sibi ostendere modum, quo ipsa peperit filium suum benedictum.

The Ecstasy of Love

Birgitta is moved to a state of profound contemplative ecstasy through her intense love for the Virgin Mary.

One day, while Lady Birgitta, the bride of Christ, was in Rome and deep in prayer, she began to reflect on the Virgin's childbirth and on the supreme goodness of God, who chose to take such a pure mother for himself. Her heart was so inflamed at that moment with love for the Virgin that she said to herself, "My Lady, Queen of Heaven, my heart rejoices so much that the Most High God chose you to be His mother and deigned to bestow such great dignity upon you," I would rather choose to be tormented in hell forever than have you lose even the smallest moment of such excellent glory and your heavenly dignity. Intoxicated by the sweetness of love, she stood outside herself, detached from her senses, suspended in a kind of mental ecstasy of contemplation.

The Promise of Pilgrimage

The Virgin Mary appears to Birgitta, promising a future pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Bethlehem where the mystery of the Nativity will be revealed.

Then the Virgin appeared to her and said: “Pay attention, daughter.” “I am the Queen of Heaven, and because you love me with such immense love, I am telling you that you will go on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Jerusalem when it pleases my Son.” From there you'll go to Bethlehem, and there I'll show you in that very place the whole way that I gave birth to my same son, Jesus Christ, because it pleased him that it be so.

Et sic amoris dulcedine inebriata stabat supra se alienata a sensibus in quodam extasi mentalis contemplacionis suspensa. Cui tunc virgo apparuit dicens ei:

"Attende filia! Ego sum regina celi, et quia tu me diligis tam immenso amore, ideo annuncio tibi, quod tu ibis in sanctam ciuitatem Iherusalem peregrinando, quando placuerit filio meo.

Et inde ibis ad Bethleem ibique ostendam tibi in loco proprio totum modum, qualiter ego peperi eundem filium meum Ihesum Christum, quia sic placuit ei."
