Chapter 122Revel.6.122

Christus ostendit, quod exemplo suo amici Dei moderare debent gestus suos, ne labor oracionum fiat minor ad coronam.

The Pattern of Holy Moderation

Christ presents his own earthly life as the standard for balanced and imitable devotion.

The Son of God says: "In my humanity, I balanced my prayers, labors, and fasts so that those who saw them wouldn't be scandalized, and those who were absent wouldn't be offended; instead, everyone who wanted to could imitate my words, my works, and my example."

Discretion in the Interior Life

The visionary is encouraged to practice her spiritual exercises with greater discretion and privacy to ensure their efficacy.

This lady, whom you see now acting in such remarkable ways, is not without great temptation, nor is she without the prick of conscience.1 Therefore, it's advised that she moderate her behavior more temperately and do what she does more in private than in public. Otherwise, her labor will be in vain and her prayer will count for less toward her crown.

Notes

  1. 1The Latin 'remorsu consciencie' refers to the sharp, painful awareness of one's own shortcomings or sins, often serving as a catalyst for repentance.
