The Silent Presence
The bride encounters a house haunted by a demonic presence that thrives on the inhabitants' hidden idolatry.
One night, when the bride was staying in a house where a devil was speaking openly, giving answers, and predicting many things, that unclean spirit fell silent as soon as she was present. Then, while she was praying, she heard a voice speaking to her, though she saw no one: "In this place," it said, "some evil things have been done by those who lived here before, and by those who live here now." For they worship household gods and don't attend church except to keep up appearances before others, nor do they ever listen to the word of God. That is why the devil holds power here.
The Authority of Truth
Divine instruction is given to the inhabitants to renounce their superstitions and embrace the true faith in God and the sacraments.
Therefore, have your confessor gather everyone living in that house, along with the neighbors, and say these words to them: 'God is one and three.' 'Through whom all things were made, and without whom nothing can be made.' The devil is still God's creature, and he can't move a single straw in your path unless God permits it. But when you seek and love created things and the world more than God, and seek to get rich against God, then the devil begins to possess your souls, making you prosper in worldly things by the permission of God's justice. Therefore, believe in God and cast off the serpents to whom you have been offering milk; don't offer the first fruits of your cattle, your pigs, your bread, your wine, or anything else to household spirits. Don't say that luck causes this or that, but rather that God has permitted it. Don't say that nothing more than a small piece of bread is offered on the altar; instead, firmly believe that the Body of God, which was crucified on the cross, is truly there, and truly believe in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and anointing, and then the devil will flee from you.
The Expulsion of Darkness
Upon the inhabitants' public profession of faith, the devil is forced to flee, leaving the house cleansed.
So when everyone cried out, "We believe and we promise to amend our lives," a voice immediately came from the furnace where the devil had been giving his answers, saying, "Look, I have no place here anymore." With that, he left in confusion, and neither his voice nor his torment was ever heard there again.
