Chapter 77Revel.6.77

The Mercy of the Vineyard

Christ corrects a narrow view of salvation, promising mercy to those outside the faith who labored in good conscience.

The Son speaks to the bride, saying, "What did that talkative brother say to you?" She replied, "That the Gentiles who were not called to the vineyard will in no way have any fruit from the vineyard." The Lord answered, "Tell him this: 'The time is coming when there will be one fold and one shepherd, one faith and one clear knowledge of God, and then many who were called to the vineyard will be rejected.'" But those who weren't called, yet worked to the best of their ability to be called, will indeed receive from God some mercy and grace of relief in their sufferings, even though they won't enter the vineyard itself.

The Call to Interior Simplicity

The Lord admonishes the religious brother to abandon vain intellectual arguments in favor of humble prayer and interior conversion.

Also, tell him: 'For your salvation, it's better to pray the Lord's Prayer with devout simplicity than to argue sophistically about such subtle things just for the sake of worldly vanity.' Think, then, about the state of mind you were in when you entered the religious life, and know that you would sooner be begging for bread elsewhere. However, if you change your will, God will soften His judgment.'
