Chapter 63Revel.6.63

A Call to Apostolic Duty

Christ commands the Pope to seek peace between warring nations and to proclaim the jubilee in Italy.

The Son speaks to the bride: "Write these words to Pope Clement for me: I have exalted you and raised you above every rank of honor." Rise, therefore, to make peace between the kings of France and England, who are dangerous beasts and traitors to souls. Then come to Italy and preach there the Word, and the year of salvation and of divine love! And look at the streets paved with the blood of my saints, and I will give you that reward which will never end.

The Divine Reckoning

Christ confronts the Pope regarding his past negligence, ambition, and failure to reform the Church.

Look back at those earlier times when you boldly provoked me to anger and I remained silent; times when you did what you wanted and what you shouldn't have, and I, as if not judging, was patient. My time is drawing near, and I will hold you accountable for the negligence and audacity of your time. And just as I raised you through every rank, so you will descend spiritually through other ranks, which you will truly experience in soul and body, unless you obey my words. Your boastful tongue will fall silent, and the name you’ve made for yourself on earth will be forgotten and held in contempt in my sight and in the sight of my saints. I will also demand an account of how unworthily you climbed to every rank—even though it was by my permission—something I, God, know better than your own negligent conscience remembers. I will also ask you how lukewarm you’ve been in working for peace between kings, and how much you’ve turned toward the other side. Furthermore, it won't be forgotten how greed and ambition flourished and grew in the Church during your time, and that you could have reformed and corrected many things, but you, a lover of the flesh, would not.

An Urgent Invitation to Repentance

Christ urges the Pope to act before his final hour, appealing to his conscience to recognize the truth of these words.

Rise up, then, before your final hour arrives, and in this, the eleventh hour, zealously wipe away the negligence of the past. But if you doubt whose spirit these words come from, look at the kingdom and the person who are well-known, in whom such astonishment and wonders have occurred. For the justice and mercy I speak of are drawing near everywhere on earth, and your own conscience tells you that what I advise is reasonable, and that what I urge is an act of love. And if my patience hadn't held you back, you would have already fallen much deeper than those who came before you. So, search the book of your conscience and see if I'm telling the truth!

Queram quoque a te, quantum in reformacione pacis regum tepuisti et quantum in aliam partem declinasti.
