The Fourth Commandment
This section introduces the fourth commandment regarding the Sabbath day, quoting its text from Exodus.
Question 59. What is the fourth commandment? Answer. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.” (Ex. 20:8–10).
Understanding the Sabbath Commandment
The Sabbath is a day to remember God's blessings, starting with creation and continuing through redemption, with Christians observing it on Sunday.
Question 60. How should we understand this commandment? Answer. We should know that God, so that people would remember the good deeds He performed for humankind, established one day and dedicated it to remembering all His good deeds, so that people, remembering the mercies granted by God on this day, would thank Him and glorify His greatness. Specifically, since He created the entire world in six days out of nothing, and rested from His works on the seventh day; He consecrated it, so that people, too, would set aside all their work on this day, bless and glorify God, remembering the good deeds He granted us through the creation of the world. Besides this, when He freed the Israelites from Egypt, He established the feast of Passover through Moses; also in other places in the Old Testament, other days that should be celebrated are often recalled. But we Christians, instead of the Sabbath, celebrate Sunday, for the reason that on this day, through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord, the renewal of the entire world and the liberation of humankind from the devil's slavery were accomplished. On this entire day, we must set aside all our work and labors, so that, having freedom throughout the day, we can engage in prayers and sacred activities for the good deeds God has shown us; also servants and slaves, of every kind, should not engage in work on this day, but should do God-pleasing deeds and glorify God with prayers. By the power of this commandment, we are obligated to observe all other days that the Church has commanded to be kept holy, such as: the solemn feasts, the Nativity of Christ, the Circumcision, the Theophany, the Presentation, the Resurrection, the Ascension of Christ, and others; likewise also the days celebrated in honor of the Ever-Virgin Mary, the Apostles, the Martyrs, and other Saints. How Sunday ought to be celebrated is taught by the Sixth Ecumenical Council in its 91st canon.
Christ as Lord of the Sabbath
The shift from Sabbath to Sunday observance is justified because Christ, as Lord of the Sabbath, rose on Sunday, thereby renewing the world and granting salvation.
The reason the Sabbath day was changed to Sunday is that Christ is Lord of the Sabbath, according to Scripture: "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath" (Matt. 12:8). Therefore, if Christ is Lord of the Sabbath, then the Sabbath was reasonably changed to the Lord's Day, both because Christ is subject to no one, and because Christ rose from the dead on this particular day, not another, and because on that day peace was restored and renewed through the gift of eternal salvation.
