The Third Commandment
This pericope introduces the third commandment, which prohibits taking the Lord's name in vain.
Question 57. What is the third commandment? Answer. “Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7). 20:7).
What the Commandment Teaches
This section elaborates on the teachings of the third commandment, emphasizing reverence for God's name, avoiding false oaths, and fulfilling vows.
Question 58. What does this commandment teach? Answer. First, it teaches us to hold the name of the Lord God in deep and great reverence, not using it lightly or in trivial or unjust matters. Second, it teaches us not to speak God's name to confirm our lies, nor to swear falsely. Third, we should not give anyone an opportunity or force another to make a false oath. Fourth, that those who make vows to God should fulfill them, as Scripture commands, saying: “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will surely demand it of you, and you will incur sin” (Deut. 23:21). In this case, all those who pledge at baptism to observe the Orthodox faith in God until death sin, but later, for their own reasons, turn away from it, either fearing to lose their honor or property, or dreading to lose their lives; thus they clearly break their oath and renounce what they promised God with an oath. The Apostle Paul, foreseeing that he would soon be free from such dangers, said: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Tim.
Fulfilling Vows

4, 7).
