The Fifth Commandment
The fifth commandment instructs us to honor our father and mother.
Question 61. What is the fifth commandment? Answer. “Honor your father and your mother, so that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the good land that the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12).
Understanding the Commandment
Honoring parents stems from natural reason and God's benefits, extending to all authorities and superiors.
Question 62. How should we understand this commandment? Answer. This commandment tells us to honor our parents and show them every kind of submission and respect, since they gave us life and raised us. And natural reason itself — even if we had no command from God about it — teaches us that loving and honoring our parents is a necessary duty, for they have put us in their debt by kindnesses we can never repay in kind, since we can't give them life the way they gave it to us. So then, since we receive greater benefits from no one but God—apart from spiritual gifts—than we do from our own parents, we ought to love and honor them above everyone else. Besides that, in this commandment the words "father and mother" also take in everyone from whom we receive any benefit at all: spiritual fathers, teachers, masters, rulers, sovereigns, those in authority, and others like them. The Apostle shows this in these words: "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities." And a little further on: "honor to whom honor is due" (Rom.1 13:1, 7).
Obedience and Love for Superiors
Disobedience to parents is condemned, but obedience to God takes precedence, and respect for superiors should be shown through goodwill and obedience.
The Apostle calls those who don't obey their parents "senseless" (Rom.2 1:31). We must keep only one thing in mind: when the glory of God or his holy commandment is at stake, then we must obey God rather than our parents, following Christ's teaching: "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me" (Matt. 10:37). All higher authorities are to be understood here as well. Finally, the respect and love we owe those set over us should show itself in genuine goodwill toward them, in obedience, in respectful speech, and in similar ways.
