The Second Commandment

This section introduces and states the second commandment, which prohibits the creation and worship of idols and images.

Question 53. What is the second commandment? Answer. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, nor any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them” (Exodus 20:4).

Understanding the Second Commandment

The second commandment is explained as distinct from the first, focusing on external acts of worship and prohibiting the veneration of false gods, greed, and other forms of idolatrous devotion.

Question 54. How should we understand this commandment? Answer. This commandment differs from the first; for that one speaks of the one true God, forbidding and eradicating polytheism, while this one concerns certain external sacred rites: that is, i.e., we must not only not worship false gods, but also not make any likeness in their honor, nor render them divine service, nor offer sacrifices in worship. Therefore, those who worship idols as gods, offer sacrifices to them, and place all their hope and trust in them sin against this commandment, as the Psalmist testifies, saying: “The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands; they have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear; indeed, there is no breath in their mouths. May those who make them become like them, and all who trust in them” (Psalm 134:15–18). Also, those who are devoted to avarice sin against this commandment, of whom Holy Scripture says: “Put to death, therefore, whatever in your earthly bodies is dead to sin: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5). Gluttons also fall into this, of whom Scripture says: “Whose god is their stomach, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things” (Philippians 3:19). Others break this commandment by resorting to sorcery and magic, by believing that luck and fate are unchangeable and reliable, by observing the flight of birds, by reading palms, by consulting the dead, by divination with cups, and so on. They also turn people into sheep and other animals; they wear amulets to ward off evil; they carry notes with them; they believe in magical incantations or the signs drawn on them. When they look at these, or whisper prayers over them, or keep such notes on their person, they think they can neither burn nor drown nor be wounded. They use amulets and other remedies (which medical science does not approve of), whether these consist of charms, signs, or other items they hang on, wear, or remove, such as earrings or rings, and the like.

Icons vs. Idols

The chapter differentiates between idols and icons, asserting that icons are representations of true beings and that venerating them is not idolatry but a way to honor saints and remember divine figures.

Question 55. How should one think about the icons that the Orthodox Church worships and reveres? Answer. There is a vast difference between idols and icons. Idols are imaginary and invented by humans, as the Apostle testifies, saying: “we know that an idol is nothing in the world” (1 Corinthians 8:4). But an icon is an image that represents something true, something that actually exists in the world, such as the icon of our Savior Christ, and of the Holy Virgin Mary, and of all the Saints. Pagans worshiped idols as gods and offered sacrifices to them, treating gold and silver as gods, like Nebuchadnezzar. Conversely, when we honor icons and bow to them, we aren't honoring the paint or the wood; rather, we honor the Saints depicted on the icons, keeping in mind their presence as if they were before our eyes. For example, when we venerate the Crucified, we bring to mind Christ hanging on the Cross for our salvation, bowing our heads and knees to Him with thanksgiving. Likewise, when we venerate the icon of the Virgin Mary, we lift our minds to the Most Holy Mother of God, bowing our heads and knees to Her, and together with the Archangel Gabriel, calling Her blessed above all men and women. So, the veneration of holy icons, as practiced by the Orthodox Church, does not violate this commandment. This is because it is not the same as the worship we give to God. Furthermore, Orthodox Christians do not worship the paint itself, but rather the Saints represented in the icons. Just as the Cherubim overshadowing the Tabernacle of Testimony represented the real Cherubim standing before God in heaven, and just as the Israelites worshiped and honored them without the slightest violation of this divine commandment; so too, when the Israelites bowed before the Tabernacle of Testimony and gave it proper honor (2 Samuel 6), they committed no sin by doing so, nor did they violate this commandment of the Decalogue. Instead, they glorified God even more. Similarly, when we honor holy icons, we do not transgress this commandment of the Decalogue, but rather praise God, who is wonderful in His Saints (Psalm 67:36). We should only strive to ensure that every icon has an inscription indicating which Saint is depicted, so that the worshipper's spirit can be more readily satisfied. To further solidify the veneration of holy icons, the Church of God, at the Seventh Ecumenical Council, anathematized all iconoclasts and established the veneration of honorable icons forever, as shown by the ninth canon of this Council.

The Bronze Serpent and True Worship

The destruction of the bronze serpent is explained as a necessary act to prevent its worship, contrasting this with Christian veneration of icons, which is seen as a means to draw closer to God.

Question 56. Why then in the Old Testament Scripture (2 Kings 18:4) is the one (Hezekiah) praised who destroyed the bronze serpent, previously raised by Moses himself? Answer. This is because the Israelites began to turn away from worshiping the true God and started worshiping this serpent as the true God, offering incense to it, as Scripture testifies. Therefore, wanting to stop this evil and prevent its further spread, Hezekiah smashed the serpent so that the Israelites would no longer have a reason for idolatry. Before, when they were not giving this serpent divine worship and service, no one condemned them for idolatry, and no one smashed the serpent either. But Christians do not worship icons as gods and, by bowing to them, do not turn away from serving the true God, but are rather guided to God through them, when, with compunction, they honor the Saints themselves in their images, as friends of God, and ask them to intercede for them before God. If someone, out of simplicity, worships them in a way we do not approve of, it is better to instruct that person than to remove the practice of honoring holy icons from the Church.
