The Ten Commandments and Their Fulfillment
This section clarifies that while ceremonial laws of the Old Testament have passed, the moral commandments concerning love for God and neighbor remain binding for Christians, with an even higher standard of adherence required.
Question 46. Since we've discussed virtues and vices enough, please teach me God's commandments? Answer. There are ten commandments from God, but others are included within these. Question 47. But didn't the Old Testament commandments end? Answer. The Old Testament commandments that concerned rituals and types, foreshadowing Christ's work, have all ended. Just as a shadow passes when the truth appears, so they too have passed, and Christians aren't obligated to keep them. But the commandments that prescribe love for God and neighbor are not only binding on Christians, but must be observed with far greater precision and fullness than the Old Testament Israelites observed them. Since we have received far greater benefits from God, and with incomparable advantage over them have received the grace of the Holy Spirit through our Lord Jesus Christ, our virtues must therefore surpass the deeds of the Jews, as it is said: 'Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven' (Matt. 5:20). Also: 'You have heard that it was said to the ancients: “You shall not murder”; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says to his brother, “Raca,” will be liable to the council; and whoever says, “You fool!” will be liable to the hell of fire' (Matt.
The Foundation of All Law
The core of all commandments, both the first and second, is the love of God and neighbor, upon which the entire law and the prophets are based.
(5:21–22). The same is said about several other commandments in this passage. Therefore, all commandments pertaining to the love of God and neighbor must be observed; for on this twofold love the entire law and the prophets are based, as the Lord says: 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And like it is the second: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets' (Matt. 22:37–40).
Reconciling Ten Commandments with Two
The two great commandments of love for God and neighbor encompass and uphold all ten commandments, which are divided into those concerning love for God and those concerning love for neighbor.
Question 48. How can there be ten commandments when our Lord Christ affirmed only two? Answer. These two commandments are general and primary, on which all others are based. This is why the ten commandments are divided into two tablets: the first lays out the commandments that prescribe our love for God, and the second contains those that teach us how we should love our neighbor. Therefore, by affirming these two commandments, Christ affirmed and legislated all ten. Concerning this law, he says: 'It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the law to become void' (Luke. 16:17).

Вопрос 47. Но ведь заповеди Ветхого Завета кончились?
Ответ. Те заповеди Ветхого Завета, которые касались обрядов и таинств, и прообразовали дела Христовы, все кончились. Как тень проходит при появлении истины, так равным образом и они прешли, и Христиане не обязываются исполнять оных. Посему-то оные десять заповедей разделяются на две скрижали, из коих на первой изложены заповеди, предписывающие нам любовь к Богу, а на второй – те, которые научают нас, каким образом мы должны любить ближнего. И так Христос, утвердив сии две заповеди, утвердил и узаконил все десять. О сем законе Он говорит: «удобее же есть небу и земли прейти, неже от закона единей черте погибнути» (Лк. 16, 17).
