What is Sin?
Sin is defined as the unruly will of humans and devils, a transgression of God's law that leads to death and God's wrath.
Question 16. What is sin? Answer. Sin does not exist in itself, because it was not created by God. Therefore, it is impossible to define what it consists of. Nevertheless, we can say that sin is the unrestrained will of man and the devil, or, as Holy Scripture says: 'sin is lawlessness' (1 John 3:4), that is, is sin is the transgression of God's law, and this transgression is specifically a rebellion against God's will, stemming from the transgressor's reason and will. From this rebellion comes death, and all of God's wrath is kindled, as Scripture says: 'desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death' (James 1:15). 1:15).
The Twofold Nature of Sin
Sin is divided into sins 'unto death' and sins 'not unto death,' with mortal sin arising from a disordered will that transgresses God's commands and cools love for God and neighbor.
Question 17. How is sin divided? Answer. According to Scripture, ‘there is a sin that leads to death’. . . and ‘there is a sin that does not lead to death’ (1 John 5:16–17). . Therefore, some sins are mortal, while others are not. Question 18. What is mortal sin? Answer. A person commits mortal sin when, moved by disordered desire, they commit an act forbidden by a clear commandment of God, or when they do not fulfill God's commands willingly and voluntarily, causing love for God and neighbor to grow cold. Such desire alienates a person from God's grace and kills the one through whom it is acted upon. Therefore, we call such a sin mortal, in line with the Apostle's words: "For the wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23). However, a person's mere intention to commit sin, although it wounds the soul, does not kill it entirely.
Original Sin and Its Remedy
Original sin, stemming from Adam's transgression, is inherited by all humanity and can only be cleansed through God's grace in baptism.
Question 19. How is mortal sin divided? Answer. Mortal sin is both original and voluntary. Question 20. What is original sin? Answer. Original sin is the transgression of God's law, given in paradise to our ancestor Adam, when it was said to him: 'But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die' (Gen. 2:17). This ancestral sin passed from Adam to all human nature, since we were all in Adam at that time; and so, through one man, sin spread to all of us. Therefore, we are conceived and born with this sin, as Holy Scripture teaches: 'Through one man sin entered into the world, and through sin death, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned' (Rom. 5:12). Original sin cannot be atoned for by any repentance; it is erased only by God's grace, through the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ and the shedding of His precious blood. This is accomplished in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Therefore, whoever has not been baptized has not been freed from this sin but is subject to wrath and eternal punishment, according to the words: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God' (John 3:5).
Voluntary Mortal Sin and Its Forgiveness
Voluntary mortal sin, committed after baptism, results in the loss of God's grace but can be forgiven through repentance and confession.
Question 21. What is a mortal sin committed willfully? Answer. A mortal sin, committed voluntarily, is one we commit after Baptism, by our own will and intention, at a mature age, against a clear commandment of God, neglecting our love for God and neighbor. Through such a sin, we lose the grace of God received in Holy Baptism and the Kingdom of Heaven, and become prisoners of eternal death, as the Apostle says: 'Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?' (Rom 6:16). This sin is cleansed by repentance, through God's mercy, in Jesus Christ our Lord, when the Priest absolves the penitent of sins during confession. Question 22. How can this mentioned voluntary sin be divided?
The Seven Capital Sins
Voluntary mortal sins are categorized, with a focus on the seven principal sins: pride, avarice, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth.
Answer. Into three kinds. The first kind includes mortal sins, the most serious ones, or those from which others are born. The second kind includes sins against the Holy Spirit. The third kind includes those sins that cry out to God most often for vengeance in this world. Question 23. What are the main mortal sins? Answer. The following: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, resentment, and complacency.
