What is Pride?
Pride is defined as an excessive desire for one's own glory, which originated the first sin and is detested by God, with humility being its opposite virtue.
Question 24. What is pride? Answer. Pride is an excessive and unjust desire for one's own glory, aiming to surpass others like oneself, whether deservedly or undeservedly. That sin was the first one born in the morning star, and from it, like a poisonous spring, all others flowed. Wisdom speaks of it: 'The fear of the Lord hates evil; he detests pride and arrogance and the evil way of the wicked' (Prov. 8:13). And elsewhere Scripture states: 'Pride is hateful to God and to humankind' (Sir. 10:7). The virtue opposite to this sin is humility.
The Virtue of Humility
Jesus Christ calls us to learn from Him, as He is meek and humble of heart, promising rest for our souls.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, praising that and calling us to love it, says: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29).
Other Vices Born of Pride
Pride gives rise to many other vices, including poor opinion of others, disobedience, boastfulness, hypocrisy, and stubbornness, and overcoming it requires remembering our mortality and God's opposition to the proud.
Question 25. What other vices, specifically, are born from this sin? Answer. These include: having a bad opinion of your neighbor; condemning spiritual and worldly people; disobedience to the Church and its leaders; also boasting, hypocrisy, arguing, stubbornness, disagreement, inappropriate diligence and busyness, self-reliance, neglect of God’s commandments, a hardening in sin and a habituation to it, and other similar things. Therefore, whoever wishes to be freed from this sin must constantly keep in mind what God said to Adam: 'you are dust, and to dust you shall return' (Gen. 3:19), also the final judgment and eternal punishment; and these Apostolic words: 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble' (Jas. 4:6; 1 Pet. 5:5).
