Question 23. What is included in the sixth petition?
Seeking Deliverance from Temptation
We pray to be delivered from all temptations, especially those that exceed our strength, whether from the world, the devil, the flesh, or persecutors, and to be strengthened to endure suffering for Christ's sake.
Answer. First, we ask God that we may be delivered from all temptations; and if this cannot be otherwise, then that his grace may at least deliver us from such temptations as are beyond our strength. Some of these come from the world, from the devil, from the flesh, and they push us toward sin. Others come from enemies who wage war against God's Church with false teaching, flattering and deceptive words, false miracles, promises of wealth and glory, and finally, through torture, oppression, and coercion, confiscation and seizure of property, and mockery—we're experiencing all of this in our time. Furthermore, in this petition we ask God that if it happens that we suffer for the testimony of his holy name, for his bride, the holy Church, and for the truth of his Gospel, he may strengthen us with his grace, so that we may endure the torments to which we are subjected with firmness and courage, until our last breath, and receive the crown of martyrdom in heaven, and that he may not allow us to undergo any suffering beyond our strength.
