The Seventh Petition

This section introduces the seventh petition of the Lord's Prayer, which is 'But deliver us from the evil one.'

Question 24. What is the seventh petition? Amen. But deliver us from evil.

Protection from Sin and Divine Wrath

This section explains that the seventh petition asks God to protect us from sin, His wrath, and other earthly calamities, and to grant us grace to face death without fear.

Question 25. What is contained in this petition? Answer. First, we ask God to keep us from all evil, specifically from sin and any shameful deed that provokes God's wrath for vengeance. Second, we ask that he be with us by his grace to avoid the fury of his anger, so that he may not rebuke us in his anger, nor punish us in his fury (Ps. 6:2) for our sins, but that we may appear before his face with praise, and sing praises to him (Ps. 94:2). We must understand that here we ask to be delivered from all other evils that are difficult for people to bear, such as: hunger, plague, wars, fires, and others. We ask for God's love for humanity to turn all these away from us. Also here we ask God that at our death he will remove from us every temptation of the enemy of our soul, and grant us the grace to complete the struggle piously and safely under the protection of his grace, and under the guidance of the angel protecting us.

Deliverance from Eternal Torment

This section emphasizes the importance of praying for deliverance from the devil's temptations at the hour of death and ultimately from eternal damnation.

For blessed is the one who dies in this way. Therefore, we must all earnestly ask God that at our death He will deliver us from the temptations and attacks of the devil. Finally, we ask to be delivered from eternal torment in hell and from the cruel devil.
