The Fifth Petition

This section introduces and states the fifth petition of the Lord's Prayer: 'And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.'

Question 20. What is the fifth petition? Answer. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.

The Meaning of Forgiveness

This pericope explains that the fifth petition asks for God's forgiveness of our sins, contingent upon our willingness to forgive others, and warns against praying for forgiveness without extending it to those who have wronged us.

Question 21. What does this petition include? Answer. First, by this we ask God to forgive us our sins, especially those we've committed since our holy Baptism, whether mortal or venial, by which we've offended God or our neighbor, in thought or inclination, word or deed. Second, by this petition, as we say, 'and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors,' we obligate ourselves to forgive our enemies. Therefore, whoever doesn't forgive their neighbor for an offense committed against them prays in vain; for their sins aren't forgiven and, what's more, their prayer itself turns into a sin, according to the words: 'and let his prayer be turned into sin' (Ps. 108, 7). And rightly so. For if we're unwilling to forgive our brothers for minor transgressions they've committed against us, how can God, whom we offend daily, hourly, and every minute, forgive us for our sins against Him, which are incomparably greater?
