The Fourth Petition
This section introduces the fourth petition of the Lord's Prayer.
Question 18. What is the fourth petition?
The Meaning of Daily Bread
The fourth petition encompasses spiritual food: God's word and the Eucharist, and the need for both.
Answer. Give us this day our daily bread. Question 19. What does this petition include? Answer. First, it includes the most excellent food for our soul, which is the word of God, according to Scripture: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4). Therefore, we ask that God not allow us to live in hunger for His holy word, i.e., the teaching of Christ, without which the inner person dies as if tormented by hunger and starvation. Here, one must consider spiritual death, which particularly befalls those who refuse to listen to God's word and teachings, thereby setting a bad example. Second, it includes another food for the soul, i.e., participation in the Body and Blood of Christ. For thus says the Lord about this: “My flesh is truly food, and My Blood is truly drink. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My Blood abides in Me, and I in him” (John 6:55–56).
Sustenance for This Life
The petition also covers all necessities for this life, urging moderation and contentment.
Therefore, in order to worthily receive this food, we ask in this part of the prayer that He Himself grant it to us by His grace and love for mankind. When we become partakers of this twofold food, then we will have within us the heavenly Kingdom of God (Luke 17:21), and after that all that is transient and perishable, which our nature needs, will be given to us by God, as if in addition, for it is written: “But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt. 6:33). Third, in this prayer, specifically in the word 'bread,' is contained everything necessary for sustaining our life in this world, both what pertains to food and all else we need for living. Here, everyone needs to be careful to ask for what is needed and necessary, not for excess or things related to indulgence, which are characteristic of an undisciplined life and from which sin is born. Paul speaks of this: 'Let us walk properly as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery' (Rom. 13:13). And elsewhere: 'But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these' (1 Tim. 6:8). The word 'today' signifies the present age, that is, as long as we live in this world; for in the next life, we will enjoy God's very presence, or vision, and the joy that comes from it. Living in God's Presence
The ultimate hope is to live in God's presence and joy in the future, with earthly needs provided as a supplement.
as long as we live in this world; for in the next life, we will enjoy God's very presence, or vision, and the joy that comes from it.
