The Third Petition

This section introduces the third petition of the Lord's Prayer.

Question 16. What is the third petition?

God's Will on Earth

The third petition asks for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Answer. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Understanding God's Will

This section poses a question about what the third petition entails.

Question 17. What does this third petition include?

Living Under God's Will

The third petition asks that God guide our lives, that we and others obey His will, and that no harm comes to us without His permission, assuring us of His care.

Answer. First, we ask God not to let us live our lives in this world according to our own will, but that He Himself guide us as He wants and as He pleases. Secondly, we ask that neither we ourselves nor other people show any disobedience or opposition to His will, and that, as the Angels in heaven obey God's will in all things without question, so all people on earth may obey God without complaint and with all gratitude. Third, by this petition, we testify that no misfortune can befall us, God's chosen ones, without God's permission and will, both concerning the devout life we are to lead and concerning temptations and attacks from the enemy. For the Lord cares not only for us, but also for the hairs of our head, as Scripture says: "But even the hairs of your head are all numbered" (Luke 12:7). And in another place: "And not a hair of your head will perish" (Luke 21:18).
