The First Petition

This section introduces the first petition of the Lord's Prayer: 'Hallowed be Thy name.'

Question 12. What is the first petition in the Lord's Prayer? Answer. May your name be kept holy.

What It Means to Hallow God's Name

This section explains that hallowing God's name involves living a godly life that inspires others to glorify God, praying for the conversion of unbelievers, and interceding for those who claim to be Christian but live poorly, thus bringing reproach upon God's name.

Question 13. What does this petition contain? Answer. First, we ask our Lord and God to grant us a godly life, adorned with virtues and good deeds, so that people might be inspired by our godly life to glorify God's name, as it is said: "Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:16). Second, with these words we ask not only that our life be for God's glory, but also that all those who do not believe in the true God and do not know Him might turn to Him and know Him, so that God's name may be glorified in them and through them. Furthermore, we pray to our Lord and God for those who bear the title of true Christianity but lead wicked and disorderly lives, through whom our faith and our God are blasphemed; concerning them, the Apostle says: "having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power" (2 Tim. 3:5). And elsewhere: "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you" (Rom. 2:24). In this part of the prayer, we ask for them to turn away from their dissolute lives and live devoutly and with restraint from now on, so that God's name may be glorified. It's important to know that God's name is holy in itself. But we say it is hallowed in us and through us when we sanctify ourselves by living a devout and virtuous life, for the glory of God's name.
