The Lord's Prayer Introduced
This section introduces the Lord's Prayer and presents its full text in Old Church Slavonic.
Question 7. What is the Lord's Prayer? Answer. Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Structure of the Prayer
The prayer is divided into an introduction, petitions, and a conclusion.
Question 8. Into how many parts is this Lord's Prayer divided? Answer. Into three parts: an introduction, petitions, and a conclusion.
The Introduction: Our Father
The introduction 'Our Father in Heaven' teaches us to approach God as His children through grace, to be part of the Church, to pray without doubt, to love our brethren, and to lift our minds to heavenly things.
Question 9. What introduction? Answer. Our Father, who art in heaven! Question 10. What does this introduction show? Answer. First, it teaches that whoever wishes to ask God must approach Him not only as His creation but also as His son by grace; for if he is not a son, he cannot call Him Father. And Jesus Christ gave this grace of adoption to those who believe in Him, as Scripture says: 'But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God' (John 1:12). And elsewhere: 'Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!"' (Gal. 4:6). Therefore, we call God our Father. Second, he must be a child of the Orthodox and Catholic Church. For whoever does not recognize the Church as his mother cannot call God his Father, as it is said: 'Tell it to the church; and if he refuses to hear the church, let him be to you like a Gentile and a tax collector' (Matt. 18:17). Third, he must not have the slightest doubt about receiving what he asks for. For he asks a loving and merciful Father, a Father common to all, as Scripture says: 'Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful' (Luke 6:36). He not only doesn't refuse what we ask for, but He Himself gives us the means to ask Him, and receives our prayers with compassion, as long as they are pure and come from the depths of the heart. For He knows what each of us will ask Him for, as it is written: 'For your Father knows what you need before you ask him' (Matt. 6:8). And elsewhere: 'If you, then, though evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!' (Matt. 7:11). Fourth, this introduction teaches that just as God is the Father of us all, so we, the faithful, must be brothers to one another and ask Him not only for ourselves but also for our brothers, praying for each other, according to the teaching of Scripture: 'Pray for one another, so that you may be healed' (James 5:16), that is, i.e. to our common Father, as Christ Himself said: 'And call no man your father on earth, for he who is your Father, he who is in heaven' (Matt. 23:9). For He, seeing our brotherly love (which He constantly commands in the Holy Gospel), rejoices as a Father, and as one ready to hear, He hears us all the more readily. Fifth, with the words 'who art in heaven,' He teaches us that when we pray, we should lift our minds and all our thoughts from the earthly and perishable to the heavenly and imperishable. However, our God and Father is not only in heaven but is present everywhere and fills all things. But since His goodness and the riches of His beneficence shine most brightly in heaven, heaven is therefore called His throne, as the Prophet says: 'His throne is in heaven' (Ps. 10:4). And elsewhere: 'The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all' (Ps. 102:19).
The Petitions
The prayer contains seven petitions.
