The Eighth Beatitude
This pericope introduces and quotes the eighth beatitude: 'Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.'
Question 59. What is the eighth beatitude? Answer. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:10).
The Meaning of Persecution for Righteousness
This pericope explains that the eighth beatitude applies to those who proclaim truth and expose sin, often facing hatred and persecution, including examples of John the Baptist and Church teachers.
Question 60. What does this beatitude teach? Answer. This blessedness belongs to those who proclaim the truth, exposing the vices and lawlessness of the wicked. For this, they face great hatred, so much so that they often lose their lives, as John the Baptist did at the hands of Herod, and as others have. It belongs to all the Teachers of the Church, the Preachers of the Gospel, the Confessors, who for their teaching and saving instruction often receive hatred and ingratitude in return from their disciples and listeners.
